“Everything here is too good,” Mara muttered, feeding me another spoonful. “Makes me nervous. Like we’re being fattened up.”
“Don’t say that,” I said quickly, glancing at Lila. “We’re safe. That’s what matters.”
Lila swung her legs. “I got new dresses! And toys! Mara showed me.”
Mara nodded, offering me bread. “They gave us clothes too. Proper ones. Not the auction rags.”
I looked down at my own new outfit—soft grey sweater, loose pants, everything fitting perfectly. “Yeah. Creepy how they got the sizes right.”
