I wrapped my arms around him and held on tight. Because this small, shaking boy — this was my whole world. And somewhere deep down, I knew: That was the first chance. And Giovanni didn’t even know he’d lost it.

I cleared my throat. Me: Sooo, as I was saying, total waste of time. It was my 18th birthday, and I had sneaked out to a nightclub with the girls. My mom was devastated... and I was too, but I had to be strong for her sake. My little sister was so young, she barely understood what was happening.”

So I just had to do it. “Trust me, it started like a perfect love story when I was younger. You know, my middle school days, high school days. I met a lovely boy who completely blew my mind away. He was charming, he was loving, he was caring, he was everything I needed in a man. Up until we got into high school, we started growing. Puberty hit and it hit him real good. He looked amazing. I was very lucky. I felt very lucky to have such a man, to have such a boyfriend.” I said and paused to see if he was still listening. He looked like he was already invested in my story, so I decided to go on.

He was indifferent to me. “ You know mimi...........” i said and looked at her, i haven't told her my love story yet. I'll tell her now, completely. I was 16, when we started talking first. But i had my eyes on him since ages. We were neighbours. My family stayed in mumbai when i was doing my school and pre University. I was actually born here but our business was established in America. So my parents usually left me with my grandmother, as i choose to stay here.

I truly felt bad for him, because I couldn’t imagine going through what he went through at such a young age, and he was still standing. He built all of this empire by himself, and it weirdly gave me a sense of pride. Today, he told me that he was going hunting and I was excited about it.

I nodded. We sat at the edge of his bed like we were afraid of waking something up between us. And then, quietly—barely above a breath—I said: “Tell me the truth. How long?” His gaze flicked to mine. “Since you were sixteen. That day you showed up with scraped knees and a broken chain on your bike. You laughed even though your eyes were full of tears. I don’t know. Something in me… stopped looking anywhere else after that.” I inhaled sharply.

“Yeah. I’d love to hear.” He looks out at the water, his voice softening. “It all started when we were six…”

Indeed, I was starting life from square ZERO. Thinking of that made my eyes sting and my heart ache. The question was: where do I even start? It was early morning. Sunlight poured through my small window, casting a soft glow. My stomach rumbled. Hunger had been a constant companion these past few weeks. Those worms in my guts had no idea my pocket change would vanish in a blink. Still, through all my ups and downs, there was one person who made me feel hopeful. And you know what? It was him.
