“He was listening.” “Of course he was,” she said quietly. “He’s careful.” She squeezed my hand gently. “You’re holding up well. Stay strong.” My voice came out hoarse. “You too. Please be careful.” She nodded before leaving, closing the door behind her. The silence that followed felt suffocating. I sat there for a long time, staring at nothing while my wolf whimpered deep inside me, wounded and restless. The pain in my chest grew until it became unbearable. Then something shifted.

Chapter 1: Masks in the darkness Being a mute used to be simple before all the craziness started. I just can’t talk and that’s who I am. Everyone at school and my parents knew the deal. Yes, I had my fourth assistant teacher, struggling her way next to me, trying to assist me with every thing, every step of the way. I had my Mum, constantly checking on me at home, encouraging me to do homework. I had a pretty good support in Shanghai, considering how people that are different are usually treated like dirt here. Mum was pretty much the best she could be. She had given up on me ever speaking long ago and we had figured every out, so things were normal. I had finally made it to year twelve, or

I bowed my head and waited for whatever he was going to tell me. “Don't get your hopes up, mute. Put yourself together because I know exactly what's going on in your mind right now and trust me when I say that's never going to happen,” He frowned and I sighed. My hopes were dashed again. “Since you're mute, I'm not really going to waste my time with you. The only thing I'm grateful to the moon goddess for is that you can hear me and so, I wouldn't have to stress myself while talking to you today,” He paused and moved closer than bent to look into my eyes. “You're the only one who isn't affected by the kind of power I have, and I think it's because we're mates,” I facepalmed.

Right now, I need to be her friend. With a broad smile, I took a seat next to her. Naturally, my smile is phony. “I bid you a pleasant morning, Luna.” To be honest, I don’t have much to do here. Alex will take care of the rest. “Oh, sorry Luna, I forgot you can’t speak,” my hands rushed to my mouth. “Should I provide you with my phone number in order for you to text me your response?” She simply stared at me, unresponsive. When did this mute become intelligent?

The comfort of his touch is a balm to the anxiety swirling inside me. “There’s something I need to tell you,” I say softly, my voice barely a whisper. He does not say anything. He continues to stroke my hair, his silence encouraging me to speak. I take a deep breath and begin my tale. I speak of the reason I lived as a mute all these years. Ezra listens intently, his expression unreadable, but I can see the tension in his jaw, the way his fists clench and unclench. “Is there anything else?” he asks simply.

She was the replica of Lance in lady form. “She is around the same age as Anna” I murmured as I caressed his screen. “That's right,” he said with a smile. A smile I couldn't understand. He was supposed to be smiling happily but somehow he was sad. “She doesn't have a voice,” “What?” I asked with a deep frown. What does he mean by that? “She's mute,” he explained and my eyes widened. There was silence in the room as I wondered how someone so beautiful could not be able to speak. It must really be hard on her.

Damon's smile faltered for a moment before he chuckled darkly. "Oh, he knows," he said, his voice low and menacing. "I sent him a text last night. Told him we'd be waiting. Let's see how long it takes him to save you... .for now...enjoy the scene until it's your turn" He pulled on Hinata's long hair so hard and continued using her as a pleasure toy. "Fucking loose, bitch...even your second hole is loose." He fisted her, stretching her beyond limits. Hinata's eyes rolled back as if she would give up the ghost soonest, her mouth open but no sound was heard only salivating and drooling like she was having seizures.

She smiled and seemed to be chatting with them but she still hadn’t said a word. “She’s mute.” Lucy leaned over to me just as I finished my third bowl of soup. “There was an attack on our pack. Vampire nearly killed her. His nails went through her neck and destroyed her vocal cords. She is group mind linking and then sometimes she will sign if she knows the person can understand it.”

_______ ~Natalie’s POV~ I don’t know how many minutes had passed being in the hands of these morons. Numbnuts here thought I was passed out. I could hear Nathan yelling through the mind-link but I had to keep calm and my heart rate low. ‘Oh snap Zoe, we forgot to bug the dungeons.’ I bemoaned. ‘Ha! Didn’t think that through, huh!? Well, once you finish faking being knocked out smart a*s, you can let Nate in on the conversation between these gorillas. You can’t speak to him though.’ She retorted. If we leave the link open, for someone who’s already in your pack to listen, you won’t be able to converse back and forth. It’s either one or the other.
