when we'd finished his birthday puzzle at dawn, high-fiving till our arms ached.
"Alright, trouble," I forced out, voice thick, "your move. Show me how you beat the monsters."
She dove in, fingers flying, edge to center, twist to fit. The maze took shape: Hedges guarding a fountain heart, paths looping like lies.
But she kept going easy, humming air through her nose, a tune I half-knew, some nursery rhyme twisted fancy. I matched her, piece by piece, till half the board sprawled done.
Then she paused, staring at a stubborn gap. The blue sky met the green wall, but the connector hid. Her lip pooched, crayon tapping thigh. HELP?
