He turned around, looking back down at me where I stood frozen at the base of the stairs.
"Goodbye, Mr. Adrian!" Ethan called out with a bright, innocent wave of his hand.
"Ethan, come along," Evelyn pleaded softly, trying to hurry him up the stairs.
Ethan did not move right away. He looked at my face, then turned to look at his mother, his dark eyes wide with simple, childlike curiosity.
"It's okay, Mommy," Ethan said loudly, his cheerful voice echoing off the high marble walls for everyone nearby to hear. "Mr. Adrian is nice! Besides, Mommy says I look like my real daddy, but I’ve never met him."
