I held it anyway. Outside, the city moved like it always did, indifferent and alive. Yellow cabs cutting lanes. A couple arguing on the corner, their voices swallowed by traffic before I could hear the words. A woman in heels walking fast, head down, somewhere to be. New York never paused for anyone’s grief. That had always been one of the things I loved about it. Tonight it felt like an insult. I pressed my hand to my stomach again.

Lauren POV My first day back in New York was… quiet. Strangely quiet. Not the chaotic, fast-paced kind of New York I remembered. The kind where horns blared constantly, people rushed past each other without making eye contact, and the city never truly slept. This quiet came from inside me. Because for the first time since everything began, I wasn’t running anymore. I was here. Back in the city where my life had fallen apart. Back in the same place where I had walked out of my marriage.

Elara’s Pov; New York smelled the same. That was the first thing that hit me when I stepped out of the car. Cold air, metal, something sharp underneath it all. Like the city never forgot anything. It stored memories in the cracks of sidewalks and waited for you to come back so it could throw them at your face. I stood there for a second too long, my bag heavy on my shoulder, my chest tight like I’d already done something wrong just by breathing the air here again.

Avery's POV New York city had been my home for as long as I can remember. The city lights, the busy atmosphere, everything had just been like that since I and Avery were little. I murmured, and then she disappeared. I was fortunate because of Chelsea. She owned an apartment a few blocks away from the office in New York City. She had a car, so I wouldn’t need to worry about transportation because I probably would live in the streets if it weren’t for her. I knew that living in the United States’ largest city wasn’t easy. The cost of living in Manhattan was beyond my savings reach. I had to tighten my budget until I got my first check.

A breathtaking, marvellous, almost frightening dream that made her feel like some fake, unlucky living thing. Amelia had never seen a city before, she was astonished to see new things appearing in front of her eyes. "You see this? This is New York, your destiny.." Richard stared out of the window, then turned his face to her, and scoffed. The city was a vast, intricate, labyrinth of noise, streets, and alleys. You could hear the incessant honking of the vehicles. It was a city of wide avenues and small places to sit and eat, to relax as folk went about their day. There were the sky towers in the centre, what was once thousands of homes now took up less ground space than an old shopping mall.

Chapter 29 The Unseen Architect Lorenzo POV ​The city of New York looked like a bed of scattered diamonds from the top floor of the Dominion Tower. Millions of lights blinked in the dark, masking the dirt, the noise, and the ugly truths of the streets below. This place is wonderful! And she was absolutely right. New York City was one of the most populous of the whole world, the flow of money, people and power was very visible there. I looked through the tinted glass of the car, several people of the most different aspects walking from one side to the other glued to their phones as if they lived in an alienated world from each other. Our apartment was located in Manhattan, the economic center of the city. Thanks to Vero's parents, who donated us a comfortable place to live, we'd be very well lodged.
