Nova couldn't sleep. The sheets twisted around her legs, the night air too heavy to breathe. Moonlight spilled across the floor, pale and cold, but all she could see was that man's face at the book fair. His words drilled through her like a rusted nail. She sat up, heart pounding.

Sienna's POV The room was already dark when I finished placing the book I’d been reading on the nightstand beside the bed. The soft patter of rain outside the window made everything feel calm, as if the world itself was taking a long breath before sleep. Noah had been fast asleep for nearly an hour, after briefly whining and asking Liam to stay with him and read one short story.

It’s too complicated to think about right now. “In the morning then,” I whisper. “Yes. In the morning.” I close my eyes and drift to a sleep so deep not even the automatic blinds coming down wakes me up. Lucas is in bed next to me when I do wake up, and he’s in that deep, dead, vampire-style sleep. I conjure a small energy ball so I can see my way into the bathroom. After the boys had left my room, I went through my bag and pulled out my favorite book, Night Flame, by Catherine Hart. I sat back in my chair by the window, prepared to spend the rest of the afternoon reading when a shiver ran down my spine. I jumped out of my seat and spun around to see a pair of yellow eyes glowing in the corner of the room. As those eyes drew closer to me, I realized that it was Simon, the fae that came to warn me the other day.

They have a doctor and an engineer as sons. Because there was a bathroom in the room, I showered before sleeping. For the pleasure of the water's heat, there was only the rumbling of the shower. After dressing, I quickly retired to bed and closed my eyes, exhausted. I was sobbing as I saw all I had dreamed of gradually going away.
