Nightingale Book Novels & Stories

Chapter 35 Nuri’s POV Every time I come to the palace, everyone is agitated. I stood in the hospital of the palace, slowly turning over the medical books in my hands. The house was very quiet, only birds and insects could be heard. The doctors were kneeling on the floor. Cold sweat was dripping from their foreheads and some of the cowards were already shivering a little. Nothing scares people more than inscrutable silence. I put down the book in my hand and asked casually, “I heard someone was sick yesterday?”

Warmth encircled me and the welcoming scent of the ocean woke me from my slumber. I was in Justin's room. I looked over realizing we had both moved to the middle of the bed causing me to be a few inches away from him. Justin's hair was a mess sticking up every which way, though mine was probably worse.

The Book didn’t whisper that night; it screamed through the stillness of the house. Autumn jolted awake at precisely 3:33 a.m., her heart racing as she blinked at the sight before her. The Book pulsed with a ghostly light at the foot of her bed, its pages fluttering violently like trapped birds, despite the windows being securely shut against the autumn chill. The pendant that hung around her neck, an ornate piece of silver filigree, felt uncomfortably cold against her collarbone, as if it were absorbing the warmth from her skin.

The balcony curtains billowed inward though the doors were closed. Then… I heard a whisper. So faint it was almost carried away by the wind. "...Maritza..." I froze in shock. Slowly… Very slowly… I looked over my shoulder but the room was empty. My heart pounded. "Did someone just..." Silence… Only the gentle sound of the Nile flowing beneath the moonlight. I closed the book and laughed nervously. "I guess, I'm spending too much time reading ancient legends." But as I placed the book on the bedside table, I failed to notice the final page turning by itself.

The second the door shut behind her, the office became quiet again. Still… for some reason, concentrating became harder afterward. I forced myself back into work anyway. The rest of the day passed in meetings and endless paperwork until evening finally arrived. By the time I returned home, darkness had already settled outside. A maid approached me the moment I stepped into the mansion. “Good evening, Mr. Knight.” I removed my watch slowly. “Has she woken up?” The maid hesitated slightly. “No, sir.” My expression hardened faintly. “She’s been sleeping all day?”

One afternoon, as they sat on the porch swing, Nanny Mama Hazel, her eyes twinkling with amusement, announced, "Theo, I have a surprise for you!" Theo, his face alight with curiosity, leaned forward, his small hand reaching out to touch Nanny Mama Hazel's. "What is it, Nanny Mama Hazel?" Nanny Mama Hazel smiled, her voice a gentle melody. "I've been saving this for a special occasion. It's a book, a very special book." She reached into her bag and pulled out a beautifully illustrated book, its cover adorned with a picture of a firefly. Theo's eyes widened with delight.

I read it aloud, my voice trembling as the words filled the small room. "Grace, Ethan, Julian... If you are reading this, the Nightingale has fallen. The silence you feel is the sound of the Wolfe name finally being returned to the earth. I am the last of the old blood, and I have chosen to be the one who turns out the lights.

“Tell me, who?!” “I’m not sure. It doesn’t matter yet.” She tried to limp away in a rush. “I’ll go call your Beta.” “No. Listen...” I gripped her hand tightly, stopping her. I guided her hand toward the bronze coloured bookcase within the rows of book shelves just meters away from where I fell. “Third shelf. Pull Nighthound Oath… there’s a latch.” She fumbled through the books until she found it. A soft click echoed in the room, and the back panel slid open.

GRACE I opened my eyes to a bright light before me. My vision was blurry but u could tell that I was in the palace's clinic. Why am I here? I turned to my left and saw a nurse sitting beside me while reading a book titled ‘the boy that cried all day.’ I grunted in pain as I tried to sit up. The nurse immediately rushed at me. “You shouldn’t try to sit up, dear. You’re still burning up from fever. All you need to do is rest and I’m sure that you’ll recover in no time.”

Nikolai muttered, but he was smiling. Pajamas next. Pascal’s favorite set with tiny rocket ships zooming across blue fabric. Nikolai helped pull the shirt over his head, smoothing it down when Pascal’s arms got tangled. “Story time?” Pascal asked, already climbing into bed, eyes bright despite the late hour. “Story time,” Nikolai confirmed. He pulled the covers up to Pascal’s chin, then settled on the edge of the mattress, picking up the worn picture book from the nightstand—The Knight and the Lonely Dragon.
