Tie stood behind Katrina’s chair, one hand on her shoulder, wearing the expression of a male wisely staying out of all D’Amore-Fayte culinary politics. Papa sat at the head of the outdoor table like a king pretending not to notice blankets, baby bottles, and emotional nonsense had invaded his kingdom. Perfect time for gifts. I slid a box across the table with a flourish. “For you, Papa,” I said brightly, my tone wickedly pleased. “A token of my endless devotion.” Darren stiffened beside me. That should have warned me. Papa opened the box and lifted out a black ceramic mug with silver lettering that read “Papa of Nightmares.”

The day care was about twenty minutes' walk from the mansion and two blocks away from the clan's orphanage homes, which catered for half of the clan's population. The sound of children playing filled the cool autumn air. Daisy immediately turned to kiss me on the cheeks absent-mindedly and her father's before running to the playground to play. With Daisy gone, Zander and I advanced towards the administrative office to register me as Daisy’s new guardian. We spent less than twenty minutes at the daycare center and when Zander led us out, he uttered,

“And holy fuck the cost of daycare!” As he said that, Karan, one of the Shack’s bunnies, came back in and tried to disappear into the background. “Nope, Karan, get up here.” Trigg called motioning for her to join them. “How many of you knew that she was doing online classes for childhood development and education?” Karan blushed as she walked up to the front. “I can’t be a club girl for the rest of my life.” “That’s true. And we’ve discovered that several of our girls work at various daycares and get paid shit.” Brute, the mother houses president, added. “We have a proposal.”

I put my resume everywhere, kindergartens, schools, famous companies, restaurants, I even cry with fear of not getting a new job. But, thank God, I am called to work at a day care center, Universo Infantil. The name is very cute and, as soon as I get to know the place, I almost give up on staying, because the children look more like little demons. Oh, problem children, for God's sake! They throw papers at everyone, there are scratches on the walls, even paint splatters. These kids are not normal. Too unlucky, I'm accepted into the nursery to take care of these little brats, but the school isn't bad, it pays well and the teachers aren't that annoying, I mean, some really are, some aren't.

I should call Nori’s daycare and tell them she’s not returning. "Siri...call Daycare.” The line dialed for a moment, but in the end, I received the voicemail instead. “Hey! This is Nori’s mom…um…this is Simone Livingston. Nori won’t be returning to the daycare. Things didn’t go as planned in court today. She’s gone.” I ended the call, hoping that the worst was over. My hope was short-lived when I remembered I had to break down Nori’s nursery. The tears returned. I thought I was all cried out, but the body had an excellent way of surprising you.

Mom glances over at me with a curious look and then states, "Breakfast will be ready in a minute. I threw some cinnamon rolls in the oven and they still have a minute or two before they are brown." Smiling, I reply, "Oh, that sounds yummy mom. Thanks." Sitting down at the table, I wait patiently as I drink my orange juice. Mom glances over at me again and asks, "Did you have anymore nightmares last night?" "Yes, I don't know what is going on. Ever since Billie gave me Charlie, I have been having this same bad dream over and over. It is so real that I peed the bed, I'm sorry."

Nia said as she got up and knocked on the sliding glass doors, hard enough for Matt to stop bouncing with Cameron on the trampoline and look up. “Come on, Cam! Daycare tomorrow!” she called out. Little man tumbled off the trampoline like he was training for the NFL and ran inside with a grin. Damn. I guess they love daycare. Nia must’ve read my face because she laughed. “Of course they do. My sister Trinity runs it.” “Ohhh, right!” I said, remembering. “Well, when they get back, they’re gonna be knocked out. Trinity’s got more energy than a five hour energy drink.”

Clare immediately starts playing with it. Lucy and Alana exchange some pleasantries before we continue walking. The daycare is on the other side of the building. The name 'The Kids Guardian' is written in colorful letters on the wall above a large window. Through the window, you can see a spacious room with various play equipment. It reminds me of an indoor arcade for children, only on a smaller scale. We arrive at the entrance and Clare opens the door with her key. I see an intercom on the side, which is probably for the parents so that not everyone can just walk in. That was to be expected at a security company.
