Chapter 1 I woke slowly with my head pounding, feeling very disoriented. It was pitch black in my room as I opened my eyes. I reached over to turn my bedroom lamp on, but felt nothing. Where was my lamp? And then it all came back flooding to me. Liam kidnapped. Claire and the pack missing. The imprint.

She grabbed her book and started reading so it looked like she was nonchalant about the whole situation. When Jesse stepped out of the bathroom, he wasn't paying attention to Renee. He started walking over to the dresser but stopped on his side of the bed as he looked up and saw her propped up reading. His eyes trailed down her body as he realized she wasn't wearing a nightshirt. Was she taunting him with what he couldn't have? Or was she inviting him to have sex?

His breath slowed. His hands relaxed. And without warning— The room melted. And the dream began. The Nightmare Smoke. Everywhere. It twisted like a serpent through the air, wrapping around his throat. He stumbled through it—barefoot, shirt torn, hands dripping blood that wasn't his. "Xavier..." The voice came from nowhere, yet it pulsed through his bones. He stepped over a broken spear. All around him, wolves lay fallen—some he recognized. Some he didn't. Their eyes stared blankly at the stars.

Marretje adds when she sees me stare longer than necessary at the books; little does she know that I have less interest in reading. I have my hands on the drawing in no time, my fingers neatly trailing the stained, softened edges of the paper. Something about the rough sketch etches a feeling of familiarity with it, but I am not certain if Katelyn once showed it to me. Without warning, my head pulls back and my hands freeze, a bright white light flashing in front of my eyes before I could blink twice. My neck seems to snap from the force that is. I am lost—somewhere in a cold acre full of ice and snow, so much snow that I struggle to keep my legs steady.

No, at night, it gave full-on horror movie vibes. “The internet connection here is trash! Why the hell would you choose a place with zero signal for your birthday retreat?” Xana huffed, pacing back and forth in front of the window while holding her phone up high like it was a sacred artifact. “I need to know what’s going on in both the human and wolf world. Also, I want people to see this new nightmare set your mom made,it’s absolutely gorgeous!”

My nightmares started that night when I stepped into the woods. Why am I seeing wolves around? How did I even end up naked beside a wolf? I should stop reading so much fantasy stuff. It is clearly affecting my brain. I remember I started feeling a bit dizzy after having that drink and I partly remember that Xavier tried to kiss me. What happened to him? Where is he? He better apologize to me for his action. If he thinks he can get over it, then he is completely mistaken. I am glad that it is the weekend. I can rest, my body is aching, my head is aching, and my neck is also aching. I feel like a complete disaster right now.

I scrubbed myself vigorously, trying to erase the titillating sensations that had taken over. After a brisk shower, I prepped for bed. It was a nightly ritual of mine to read a book before sleeping. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, one of my all-time favorites. But no matter how hard I tried to focus on the story, my mind kept wandering back to a certain dreamy figure: Xander Coleman. My heart raced at the mere thought of his name. Once again, I felt a familiar wetness between my legs, a throbbing ache that demanded attention. It was becoming a pattern, a maddening cycle that I couldn’t escape.

JAX I wake up in a cold sweat, panting as my eyes adjust to the darkness of my room. All the talk lately about the shadow pack and strategizing how to align our defenses with Denver has been seeping into my nightmares, robbing me of sleep. I’m lucky in that I don’t have any personal experience with the shadow pack thus far, but in my nightmares Alpha Xavier is this larger-than-life villain, his followers these soulless, twisted monsters who kill without remorse. Then again, from what I’ve heard about the shadow pack, the version of them in my dreams may not be too far off.

“She put her hand over my heart, and the power kept flowing to her. As I was about to black out, I heard Xander's voice, and I woke up.” As I recount the details of my nightmare to Xander, I notice a flicker of concern in his eyes, his brow furrowing as he listens intently to my words. “Babe…" he starts, his voice filled with worry and a hint of curiosity. “That sounds… intense. Do you think it's connected to what's been happening with Miles and the letters?”
