When I don't hear another sound after a while, I go back to sleep. "Anna!" I hear someone scream right next to me and I freeze. It is an eerie sound that causes all of my warning bells to go off in my head, but when I don't move, nothing happens. I lay there completely still for several hours with the sweat dripping down my face and I feel like I am going to die tonight. It's an inexplicable feeling of dread and sadness, but it's very real. "Anna." The scream is even louder now and it sounds like it's coming from inside my head.

The gut-wrenching scream tore through the eerie silence of the night. The nurse on night duty burst into the room, startled by the sound. Samantha was thrashing in her bed, her legs tangled in the sheets, fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her face was flushed red, soaked with tears as she screamed in agony, her voice raw and trembling.

NIGHTMARES. A very bad or frightening dream. Anna was starting to lose count of the number of nightmares she’s been having since Josh’s death but whenever she woke up with one, clearing her head with a jog had been working well on her. She lets out a sigh as she turns sideways to stare at the mini alarm clock she had next to her bed. The time read 6:00 am and she hated the fact that she had to be awake at this early hour of the day.

RACHAEL'S POV ”Mom, no... please don’t leave me!” The scream pierces through my sleep, jagged and full of despair; my eyes snap open, my heart pounding. It takes me a moment to realize the sound was coming from Jake. I turn to find him thrashing on the bed, his face twisted in anguish, sweat glistening on his forehead. “Jake, wake up!” I shove his shoulder, panic rising in my chest. “You’re having a nightmare!”

In a final, desperate effort, Divine screamed, a sound of pure terror that shattered the dream. She awoke with a start, her body drenched in sweat, her heart pounding as if it would burst from her chest. Her scream still echoed in her ears as she sat up, gasping for breath. She looked around, disoriented, her mind still caught in the nightmare's grip.

Nightmares crawl up through the cracks, dozens of them, hundreds, dragging themselves into the light like puppets yanked forward by invisible strings. They don’t rush. They inch forward little by little. Their limbs jerk unnaturally. Heads loll at impossible angles. Mouths open and close soundlessly, as if screaming behind glass. Threads of shadow stretch upward from their backs, vanishing into the air above us. She is controlling them with an invisible hand. All of this is part of her design. I lifted my stiff legs and inched toward the corner, but my foot landed on something hard and round at the worst moment possible. A sharp, piercing screech rang out beside me. When I quickly lifted my foot to take a look, I noticed it was a bloody eyeball, which gave me such a fright that I recoiled back several steps. This was something I would normally only see on late-night TV. A ghost skittered over in a twisted, broken crawl, scooped up the eyeball, and popped it back into its socket. To suppress the scream in my throat, I pinched myself to stay focused, but the ghost had noticed me.
