I sat there for a moment with my hands still on the wheel. I had never been to a place like this alone. I had barely been to places like this at all. Loud rooms and strangers and bass you could feel in your back teeth — that was never really my idea of a good night. But tonight I didn't want a good night. I just wanted to stop thinking. I grabbed my bag and got out of the car. The music hit me the second the door opened. Heavy bass. The kind that gets into your ribs. I paused just inside the entrance and let my eyes adjust to the dim lighting, the shifting colors from whatever lights were rigged above the dance floor.

"Zack, get your head down! Those aren't survey drones!" Victor’s boots slammed into the lunar dust, sending a grey plume spiraling upward in the weak gravity. He lunged, grabbing Zack by the back of his tactical vest and hauling him behind a jagged obsidian ridge. A fraction of a second later, a beam of concentrated sonic energy shrieked over their heads. The rock hissed. Cracks spider-webbed through the stone where the sound hit.

Neither will change the course that has been set.” A murmur of voices rose outside the cell, other members moving, preparing. The torches guttered. In the stone silence, Chloe’s world narrowed to the cadence of that single number: two nights. She let out a sound that was part sob, part promise. “Valerius…”

Make sure the recommendation is queued up." I turned around.
