The voice is not Trust, not Caleb’s borrowed softness, not the polite residential recording. Silas Blackwood speaks with his own throat now. “Enough.” I have heard him through walls, through screens, through the soft mouth of systems built to make obedience sound like care. Different. Kim whispered as she held her friend tight while stroking her back soothingly. A few minutes later, Nina managed to calm herself down enough to talk coherently. “Twenty companies though... It does not make sense!!... like I’m on some kind of blacklist...” “Immediately, Nina's eyes stretched wide at the thought, and she pulled away from Kim, anger rising within her. “No! He wouldn't do this to me... God, no.” Nina whispered as she got off the bed. “What are you saying?” Kim asked in confusion as she watched Nina's head for the door, “Where are you going?”

“Nina?” A small wolf steps forward. Her coat is a patchwork of soft grey and white. Her head is lowered, and her movements seem careful. She approaches and sits in the spot Blaine had been in moments before, keeping her gaze fixed on me. “Nina,” I whisper. “Can you shift, please?” She tenses for half a second, then light ripples through her fur, a pale shimmer, and she shifts into her human form. Smaller than I remember. She looks fragile; her eyes too wide, too bright, too honest.

The kind of tone people use when they are looking for someone to blame. The old Nina wouldn't even have dared to kill a bug, let alone commit murder. How could she have changed so drastically overnight? "Are you really Nina?" Nina smiled nonchalantly.
