Je ne fais que réaliser son dernier souhait. » « Tu nous vois vaiment trop tordus. Si j'avais été infidèle, tu l'aurais su, non ? » Il savait parfaitement que, pour le sauver, j'avais perdu mon âme de louve. Qu'entre lui et moi, il n'y avait plus cette connexion télépathique propre aux compagnons liés. Depuis longtemps, je n'étais plus qu'une ordinaire. Inutile. Je n'ai ni pleuré ni crié. En silence, j'ai pris rendez-vous chez la guérisseuse pour interrompre ma grossesse. Puis, j'ai quitté cette maison. À Jackson, je n'ai laissé qu'une lettre d'adieu, et un cadeau de divorce. Mais, sans que je comprenne pourquoi, Jackson — qui m'avait toujours traitée avec mépris — s'est mis à me chercher comme un fou, obsédé par ma trace.

Comment osez-vous venir me provoquer en public avec votre enfant illégitime ? » Elle m'a poussée par terre et m'a battue, en même temps, elle a même menacé : « Une sal*pe comme vous deviendra sage une fois que vous avez reçu une leçon. » Je suis restée toute meurtrie après avoir été battue et j'ai été emmenée à la salle d'urgence. Le chirurgien principal était mon fils aîné. Il tenait le scalpel et tremblait violemment, pâle, il a demandé : « Maman, qui t'a battue comme ça ? »
