“Rhydian.” I locked eyes. Pale irises, tight jaw, six inches of air between us that had been narrowing for weeks. “The first time the mark helped me, I was choking in a burial hole,” I said. “Since then, I’ve been figuring it out in real time. This is no different.”
He held my gaze, then softened. “Stay close.”
“Always do.”
Something flickered in his face, brief, real, then gone.
Gareth spoke up behind us. “The northwest approach cuts through the outer territory first. There’s a choke point where an old creek bed runs between two ridges. One vehicle fits through at a time.” He hesitated. “I’ve walked this land for thirty years.”
