"Get up. Today's the day we get our marriage license. Don't tell me you forgot." I'd stopped expecting anything from him ages ago, but I played along. He was weirdly upbeat, talking nonstop once we got in the car. When I barely replied, he frowned. "What's with you? It's our big day—you're not even a little excited?" I turned from the window and looked straight at him. "If two people aren't in love anymore, what's the point of getting married? What if one day you wake up and realize you don't love me? What if you regret it?"

Sometimes both simultaneously. "We used to run a company," I said at 7 a.m., folding onesies that were somehow already too small. "We still run a company." "Do we though? When was the last time either of us looked at quarterly reports?" David considered this. "Tuesday." "What day is it now?" "Thursday. I think. Might be Friday." "We've lost all sense of time." "Completely." He didn't sound particularly concerned about it. "But Isabella knows what day it is, so that's fine."

I know I sound weird and stupid, but this is my first time confessing to someone. She doubtfully stare at me. I know I sound way too nervous knowing that I will be rejected by her. I didn't know who or why I felt like that. "Hey, James, what's the date today?" Maybe it was a special day I didn't remember. "It's February 26th. Why?" I thought about the date.
