Don't get tangled in the lore; follow the gameplay loop. The 'shared universe' is really a guarantee of a familiar and satisfying genre experience.

I'm actually a huge fantasy fan, and a lot of people told me to try 'Martial Universe' if I liked novels like 'Coiling Dragon'. At first it really clicked—there's a ton of early action where the MC, Lin Dong, is constantly pushing himself and getting into these scrappy brawls. It's kinetic and fast.

The thing is, it follows the classic Xianxia progression ladder, so if you've read a few of these, a lot of the beats start to feel repetitive around the mid-point. It's great for pure action consumption if that’s your goal, but the character work outside of Lin Dong’s immediate drive isn’t particularly deep. For pure spectacle, especially the Desolate Hall fights later on, I think it delivers.

I tend to read on trains, and this was a good fit for that; it doesn’t require a ton of investment, just a willingness to enjoy the next power-up.

Sometimes I wonder if I enjoyed 'True Martial World' more because I read 'Martial World' first. The moments of recognition, when a name from ancient history dropped, gave me chills. That fan-service for dedicated readers is a huge part of the sequel's appeal. If I'd read them in reverse, those moments would have been meaningless names. I'd have gotten a good story, but I would have missed that secret layer of connection that made me feel like an insider in the universe's history.

That layer of depth is what transforms a good series into a beloved one. It creates a sense of a living, breathing world with a real past. You can only get that by following the timeline of publication and discovery. You discover the world alongside the first protagonist, then later discover its true nature alongside the second. It's a brilliant narrative structure that falls apart if you mix it up.
