NATHANIEL The address leads me somewhere in midtown. New York is already alive in that aggressive way only this city knows. Morning light spills between skyscrapers in sharp golden streaks while Times Square flashes advertisements large enough to blind people before breakfast. Men in expensive suits storm across intersections with coffee cups in hand and phones pressed against their ears like billion-dollar deals will collapse if they stop talking for two seconds. Taxis choke every lane around me, horns blaring nonstop, while pedestrians curse each other like it is part of the culture.

Le Velours. The exclusive gentlemen’s club in Midtown Manhattan was a completely different world from their cramped Bronx apartment. The moment she stepped inside, the atmosphere wrapped around her, dim red and golden lighting, thick velvet curtains, soft expensive leather booths, and the low, pulsing beat of sensual music. This was a place where rich men came to indulge without consequences.

Something about a bridge being nearby is the only thing I can remember. Suddenly, the world swirls and I’m standing on that bridge with Kendric. “I fell off the cliff and then ended up here. This was our third life, for sure.” Kendric looks over at me with a confused expression. “Are you seeing this too?” A ticking clock sounds from somewhere nearby and I look around to see where it’s coming from. “Do you hear that?” A voice comes out of nowhere from somewhere above us. “Midnight is coming. Run while you can.”

The quiet inside Penthouse 4001 felt like a sacred, physical weight. Outside, midtown Manhattan was a blurred canvas of neon and low rain, the distant hum of city traffic muffled by thirty-two floors of glass. Inside, the suite was dark save for a single amber floor lamp near the lounge chair and the soft, cool illumination of Eve’s tablet.

This project had been carefully studied and analyzed for years, back when my father was still the CEO of the Montgomery Group. It was supposed to be the crown jewel of my family's empire—a massive complex of luxury towers right in the center of Manhattan.

What we’re being told through official channels is that a form of unidentified viral infection has struck Middletown. ‘They’ve all fallen asleep,’ Bridget told him, elaborating on what the reporter had said, giving him more information than the media would ever possess. ‘The whole place. The people in charge are calling it Anti-New York. You know, the city that never wakes.’ ‘It’s Midwich,’ he murmured. ‘No, Middletown,’ Bridget corrected. He gave a small shake of the head, even though she wasn’t there to see it. ‘I meant... Doesn’t matter.’ He knew his assistant’s reading tastes were more Jilly Cooper than John Wyndham, sadly.

… Back at Middle Terra in Mid Sky City, the streets were lively and full of heavy traffic. Mid Sky City was one of the big cities in Middle Terra. Middle Terra was located among the nine continents and had plenty of resources and talented people. Mid Sky City was located in the central region of Middle Terra, and so was named Central of Middle Terra. A young man and woman were walking slowly along the streets. The man was smartly dressed and handsome, while the woman looked arrogant but attractive. It was Darryl and Gonggong!
