The privacy curtain yanked back with a harsh, metallic scrape. A rough, middle-aged nurse stepped into my small corner. She wore faded blue scrubs and snapped a piece of gum loudly in her mouth. She held a metal tray loaded with basic medical supplies. Her eyes held zero compassion. To her, I was just another broken body taking up space in a severely understaffed building. She dropped the metal tray onto the rolling table beside my bed. The loud clatter sent a sharp spike of pain directly through my throbbing head. "Give me your arm," the nurse ordered gruffly. She did not wait for my compliance. She grabbed my right wrist with a rough, callous hand and yanked my arm straight.

My foster mother, Ingrid Cooper, stood aside, watching with a cold sneer. I used to not understand why they treated me like I was less than human. Today, I finally realized the truth. I was never their child, to begin with. I stumbled backward from the force of the hit. My already fragile body, weakened by late-stage lung cancer, couldn't take it. One slap alone sent me crashing to the ground, knocking over the cutting board and the ingredients on it. Jack saw it and only grew more furious. He kicked me hard. "I didn't earn all that money for you to waste food like that!"

When the hospital nurse came to treat her wound, her eyes showed disdain. How could this girl, at such a young age, be treated like this? It must be a woman who doesn't love herself! Liora Archer, unable to bear the nurse's sarcastic look and not knowing where the strength came from, suddenly shoved the nurse to the ground and screamed, "Get out! Get out of here!" The nurse was thrown a dog shit, looked cold, and sneered: "Just go, can't wait on you, big miss!" Her mother hurried in and took her daughter in her arms.

She hadn't expected Tyler to step in for her. The nurse stumbled backward and nearly fell. She looked up furiously at Tyler. "What's your problem?" Tyler loomed over her with a cold gaze. "You call this patient care? If you don't want to do your job, then leave." The nurse scoffed. "What's it to you?" Tyler's voice was harsh. "You can resign right now." The nurse lifted her chin defiantly. "Why should I? Do you own the place? Do you think you can just order people around like that?"

Nurse Sharon answers. The other nurse gasps. "Your loose tongue will get you in trouble someday if you're not careful." "Shut up. Don't jinx me," Nurse Sharon replies, her tone sharp. "I just feel bad for Dr. Pierce," the other nurse says, her voice softening. "She can be annoying, but it's hard to hate her when she does nice gestures like this for the less privileged. She spent all night operating on the boy and other emergency patients, yet she wakes up to being challenged over her goodwill by her mother."

She seemed to be having some effects over me. Without a word to her, she touched my chin, "Stop acting innocent hunny, you are too hot and I can't let you go that way!" This nurse said. I couldn't believe that this stories and movie's about nurses were true. This was like a dream come true, but I still had to make her plead and beg me to fuck her. "I am innocent, I don't think you should be doing this? Do you do this to all your clients?" I asked her.

I lost myself to save a home that I never had. My chest tightened, tears stinging my eyes once more, “No!” my voice croaked. “Not now, I don’t want to think about it now,” I whispered. But it changed nothing, the memories didn’t matter if I was ready or not. They came anyway, relentless, cruel. Mocking me for believing that I could be loved, wanted. The nurse moved closer, her eyes filled with softness as she noticed my discomfort, “Hey,” her voice gentle as she grabbed my shoulder, “try not to stress yourself, you need to rest.”

“Because Madeleine and I can’t do it.” “Yes. No parent can. And Betsy is a sweet girl. I really like her.” Could have fooled me with that statement this morning - the way the child flailed about like a wild cat, stopping only short of hissing at me. “And,” the nurse goes on as she gets up from the bed. “Not for nothing, but I’m tired of being the official nurse for every gangster in this city.” I laugh, ignoring the pain that grips my inside. “Not every gangster.”

I deserve to see that he's okay, not because I love him with all my heart but because I need to see that he's breathing so I can get on with my life. I get up from my chair and walk to the water dispenser in the hallway leading to the rooms. I pretend to drink water until I see Elliot's nurse come out through that little half-door they won't let me pass because my mate told them he didn't want to see me. "He's hard to deal with, isn't he?" I ask the nurse. She gives me a funny look, "Elliot Thorne. He’s a big pain in the ass." "Uh... yeah, sort of," she agrees, "He's very rude. He can say please and thank you and still sound like he's ordering me around."

Love said. "Your skills? You mean drugging people and messing with their heads?" Madden asked bitterly. "Exactly. You know what I am capable of Madden. You know what I did before. I was a nurse. I know how to use drugs to make people see things that are not there. To make them believe things that are not true" Love said. "And you agreed? After everything we had together you would betray me like this?" Madden asked. "We had nothing together. That was a lifetime ago. I am a different person now" Love replied.
