Nora This is not how I saw my day going at all. I was supposed to go grocery shopping, then meet up with my book club later. Not host a safehouse for teachers who escaped a massacre at Hawthorn Academy. I’m glad the professors are here, though. I just wish everyone else was as well. Especially my niece, Wendy. Even though I’ve never met her, I think about her every day. I promised her father I would check in on her if she ever were to go to Hawthorn. Since I don’t even know where she is, I’ve failed horribly.

“How she snuck up and spread her legs for Josh.” Niya stumbled back a bit, eyes expanding into saucers. She hadn’t heard that name in years. What? She never forgot? Oh God. Niya exhaled in disbelief. It had been her sophomore year – Halloween night, the quad buzzing with a bonfire and half the campus dressed in cheap plastic crowns and devil horns and whatever scraps passed as ‘sexy.’ Niya hadn’t planned to go because parties weren’t her thing, and she’d spent most of the night studying for the coming final exam. But Pony had called, slurring into the phone that she was lost and crying somewhere near the old gym. She’d said Josh was there too.
