The air was rich with the scent of aged paper and leather, a comforting contrast to the acrid smoke that haunted the streets outside. I moved slowly through towering shelves, fingertips skimming the spines of long-forgotten volumes. Titles embossed in faded gold hinted at lost wisdom: Histories of the Old World, Chronicles of Unity, Legends of the Phoenix. The last caught my attention—a striking cover depicting a phoenix rising from a blaze, wings spread wide.

Long enough that I began wondering if he had simply wandered off and forgotten I existed. Then finally he returned. A massive book rested in his arms. Ancient didn't begin to describe it. The leather cover was cracked. The edges looked half eaten by time itself. When he dropped it onto the counter, a cloud of dust exploded into the air. I coughed. The old man looked delighted by this. "This," he announced proudly, patting the cover, "contains everything known about the last Shadow Wolf." I stared at it. Then at him. Then back at the book.

I asked, touching a particular thick book. “That one’s about bloodline history,” he said when I held it up. “It was written by a half-mad seer,” he added. His answers were brief, but still it felt like a conversation. I wanted to continue, so I grabbed a book tucked behind the others. The book was so old it looked like it had survived a fire. Its edges were burnt, and blackened. The title had long faded away, and the cover was cracked with age. “What about this one?” I asked, pointing to it without touching. “Why are you keeping it?”

She came running into the kitchen with a big book and slammed it down open, making both Jensen and I jump with a grin on her face. “So,” she said excitedly, “The world is littered with all kinds of curses, and spells and prophecies. Some are so old that they could have been written by the original Alchemists themselves. There is one though that is so old it’s almost forgotten. It’s about the creation of a new supernatural species.” She turned the book and showed me the page that she was looking at. There was a crude drawing of a dog-like man, like how werewolves are shown in some of the TV Shows and movies out there.

The old man straightened his stiff body then pushed his wheelchair and turned to face Gail. "This is a book about a lost history," he said.

Good luck with Caius, though.” He whistled, shaking his head then turned serious. “The book was given to me by a deabru I say around the mid fifteen hundreds, though don’t quote me. My mind is a bit fuzzy. He was a strange bird, not quite like the other deabru. This one smelled funny. I remember that. He said he’d stolen it from a great witch, her name was Lily or Laura, I can’t remember, just that it started with an L.” Laina. “What do you mean he smelled funny?”

Olden books that talked about traditional medicine in such an amazing way that it made my head swirl. Some of the concepts explained in the notes were foreign to me and I couldn’t understand them.
