Inside was a thin silver chain, delicate, almost beautiful, except for the razor-thin device in its center blinking with faint red light.
“Do you know what this is?”
I didn’t speak.
“It’s a leash,” he said softly, almost kindly. “Invisible. Once it’s on you, Liam could find you in a heartbeat. But only if I let him.”
He was playing. Holding hope out like a prize, then dangling it over fire.
I met his eyes, steady. “He’ll come without your permission.”
The slap came fast, sharp enough to snap my head sideways. Pain lit up my cheek, but I swallowed the cry.
