The voice from the darkness was a hook in my soul, reeling us forward into the chill. We stepped through the false wall, our single flashlight beam cutting a pathetic swath through the profound black. It fell upon bones. Not neatly stacked, but piled, heaped, a jumbled sea of femurs, skulls, and rib cages that filled a cavernous space from the slimy floor to the shadowed vault of the ceiling decades above. The Ossuary. The collective remains of centuries of Blackwood pack, their final energy a silent, heavy blanket that smothered the air and muted the magic in my blood to a faint, dying whisper.

The skeleton began bubbling hard as the liquid sizzled against the dry bone structure. It bored into the marrow like acid, making the ancient cage rattle violently. The silver wires holding the ribs together began to glow red-hot under the sludge. The witch didn't stop, scooping more liquid out of the pot with rapid movements. She poured it over the arms, the spine, the legs, and the shattered pelvis. She kept on pouring it until she completely emptied the whole content of the cauldron. The skeleton was now completely submerged in a thick, boiling layer of violet sludge.

It was a bugging device. In those brief seconds, scenarios flashed through Ivy's mind. "What? Take it out," Aurum said. "What is this thing?" Ivy slowly pulled out the bugging device, pretending she had never seen it before. "What is this? It's so tiny, like a USB drive." "It's not a USB drive." "Then what is it?" "You don't recognize it?" Aurum asked. Ivy's heart skipped a beat, but she immediately shook her head. "I've never seen it before."

Bones and skulls line the corridors, casting eerie shadows that dance along the uneven surfaces. I muttered, staggering to my feet and grabbing the coat I’d left by a nearby gravestone. Together, we approached the box again. I held my breath as I peered inside and I immediately felt the air get sucked right out of my lungs. It was a skeleton. But not just any skeleton, iIt was longer than any human I’d ever seen, probably eight or nine feet tall. It's bones shimmered like glass yet looked as sturdy as steel. It was so clear that it glinted in the moonlight, and I noticed gold engravings everywhere across the bones.

"For now. My hounds do not like metal. It breaks their teeth." The creature stood up. It was tall, impossibly thin. Its bones clicked like dice in a cup. "But hunger is creative, Warden. If you cannot eat the nut... you eat the soil around it." The Skeleton walked to the ventilation shaft. He sniffed the air drifting down from D.C. "The boy is safe. But his garden..." The Skeleton smiled. His teeth were needles. "The garden is soft." He reached into his rags and pulled out a handful of dust. It wasn't gray dust. It was red.
