Clarisse opened her eyes and placed a hand on her heart as if that gesture could stop the rush of emotions she was feeling. *****************************************

He set his champagne flute on the round table and asked, "What reasons do you think a man has for approaching a lady?" Natalie pursed her lips, her gaze turning frosty. Below me was an endless ocean of black ink. Above me, there were no stars—only thousands of silver rings floating in the air.

I don’t understand. I drop to my knees. The glowing threads beneath me shimmer like rivers of light. 'Only an open heart can understand.' Her voice is warm. Wrapping around me like a blanket. 'Open your heart, Gerald. Let the pain from the past go.' She kneels. Her radiant hand lifts my chin. Our eyes lock, twin orbs of glowing light. 'Open your heart, Gerald. Then you will see the meaning of my riddles.' “Gerald… Gerald…” A distant voice pulls me from the divine.
