“Oh, you’ll see.” Zoe clapped once, eyes bright. “I’ll go get the cards!” When she returned, she carried a small deck from her backpack, the edges worn as if it had been used many times before. She sat down cross-legged, shuffling the cards with a grin that made me suspect she had been waiting for an excuse to use them. “Okay,” she said. “Who’s first?” Lila pointed at Max. “You.” Max groaned. “Of course.” He drew a card and read it aloud. “‘Name something you’ve always wanted to do but never dared to.’”

Once I pull my card the gas will take over and find my mate. Standing directly in front of the cards sends a warm feeling of coming home through me.
