“Take this.” Phoenix stretched out her hand to collect the bowl. She was laying on her stomach on a thin pallet because her back was hurting. The seer had rubbed some oil into the welts on her back and was now making some concoction for her to drink to ease the pain. She put the bowl to her lips at gagged at the smell of the liquid. It was greenish and had a very sharp and pungent smell. She started to push it away from her face when the rough hands of the seer held it in place against her mouth.

But when she pulled it free, her breath stopped. The book was unlike anything she had ever seen. Its cover was bound in leather so dark it seemed almost black, though in the right light it shimmered faintly with hues of deep crimson. Strange symbols—curved, jagged, and foreign—were etched into its surface, pressed deep into the hide like scars. No title marked its spine. A lock, thin and ancient-looking, sealed its pages.

"But I have to give him something. Because I owe him my life." I shove the thought down and open the book still clutched on my hands. The pages older than they look - stained with age, laced with spells to protect against time and tampering. But now that the fox has touched me, the script almost shift beneath my gaze, the writing scattered, like it doesn't want it to be read. The symbols rearrange themselves in an indecipherable form. The ink blurry. One page near the middle glows faintly. I trace it with a trembling finger, the language confuses me.

I rounded a corner, turned left down a tighter row, and— Stopped. There, nestled between two massive grimoires, was a book that didn’t belong. It was smaller, wrapped in black hide, no title. A circular crest gleamed faintly on the cover, a silver wolf’s head bisected by a black sword, the same we saw in the tunnel the other day. I knew that crest, its Blackwood sigil. My lungs tightened. My hand moved before my brain could catch up. I pulled the book free. Dust billowed, I coughed hard.. My heart beat faster.

“What’s this?” “Your half of the deal,” he said simply, like that explained everything. I looked down and groaned so loudly it almost felt personal. “No,” I said instantly, holding it up between two fingers like it might bite me. “Are you fucking kidding me?” “Not even a little.” The cover was already screaming p**n on paper before i even opened it. Dark, dramatic font, a shirtless vampire-looking man holding some bloodied naked girl. It looked like something that should be hidden behind locked glass in a questionable bookstore aisle.

A temporary hiding place before we inevitably end up where we always do contemporary and queer romance. Our natural habitat. I pick up a book with a massive dragon painted across the cover and slowly rotate it in my hands. Fantasy covers go hard. The artwork is ridiculous in the best way. Every scale on the dragon has been illustrated with obsessive detail. Blue melting into green, green into purple, purple streaked with gold. The colors swirl like magic itself spilled across the page. It’s so beautiful it almost hurts to look at. My lips wobble slightly. “I like him so much,” I whisper.

“You, my friend, are wise beyond your advanced years.” He inclines his head at me. “Thank you, Princess. High praise indeed.” When we finish, I go to my room and shower, bypassing breakfast with Ailduin, Anastasia and Buppig. While my stomach is grumbling with hunger, I ignore it and head straight to the library, getting the Book of Prophecies off the shelf and sitting at a table to begin reading. When I sit, I run my hand over the book cover. The top left quarter of it is no longer glowing brightly. It’s gone from a shiny gold color to that of iron, making it stand out on the cover.
