Laughing drifted across the evening like smoke. Not sure what it was, I hid behind the hedge and started sprinting alongside the side wall. There had to be another way in. A gap. A weakness. I found it a small maintenance gate slightly ajar. I slipped through before I could change my mind. The garden was massive. Everything smelled of expensive fresh roses, trimmed hedges, and earth untouched by poverty. Then I heard the shouting. “Hey!” A flashlight beam hit my face. “Don’t move!” I bolted.

On top of the 80 meter tall wall were soldiers that patrol the wall and luckily right in front of them was the west gate of the city. "Wait...are those..." The soldiers who had been patrolling on top of the wall noticed them running towards the wall. "Hey hurry up and signal the gate guards." One of the soldiers on top said to the other soldier. "Please help me, please help me, please help me." Lianne continued on repeating the words over and over. The guards on the gate opened the west gate and soldiers went to their post as the wandering people came one by one to the gate. The first one to arrive was Abdaal, the closest aid of the group leader.

Making his way around to the part of garden she was heading for, Trina knew he was following her and she moved silently through the trees waiting and listening every few minutes smiling when she heard him, ‘Come and get me.’ She whispered hiding behind the larger trees and moving so quietly there was no way he could have heard her, she knew where she was heading she had found the little hiding place quite by chance a few days ago. Garden out back, surrounded by a low stone wall. I climbed over the wall easily, dropping into the garden. Flowers everywhere. A fountain. Trees providing shade. And that scent—so strong now it was almost overwhelming. Coming from the villa itself. I moved closer, staying low, using the garden vegetation as cover. I crept closer to the villa's back door, that intoxicating scent pulling me forward like a rope around my chest. Whatever was in there—whoever was in there—I had to find them. Had to see.

I gestured for the guys to follow me to it. “Dustin, get on my shoulders. We need to see over the wall if there was a way for the intruder to climb up to get over.” Though he looked unsure, Dustin obeyed. With Tommaso’s help, he climbed up to stand on my shoulders and pulled himself up a bit. He was able to peer over the wall that was at least a foot thick. He gasped. “There’s a fallen tree!” Fuck.

So did the smell of crushed herbs that did not come from the east garden. Another path. One we had not put on the map.
