They find a massive underground lake that turns out to be the corpse of a dead World Enemy, one of the apocalyptic bosses from the game Yggdrasil. It’s a wild lore dump that recontextualizes the whole geography of the region.

The other huge moment is when Ainz basically becomes a god-king to the dwarves. He single-handedly annihilates the Quagoa army with a spell that creates a massive, permanent wall of fire, securing the dwarven capital. The political twist is that he doesn’t just conquer them; he becomes their savior and is offered sovereignty. It’s a classic Overlord move where genocide is a stepping stone to nation-building, and it sets up the Sorcerer Kingdom’s influence expanding through ‘benevolent’ tyranny. The volume ends with him securing runesmiths, but the means were utterly brutal.

The thing about volume 17 is that it sort of feels like a mandatory war epilogue. A massive chunk of it deals with the aftermath of the Holy Kingdom arc—the political and emotional cleanup after the demonic invasion and the 'miraculous' salvation by the Sorcerer King. We get to see the Kingdom's internal decay accelerating, with Phillip's breathtakingly stupid wheat scheme starting to unravel everything. That's the real plot advancement, honestly. It's not a big battlefield moment; it's the slow, inevitable collapse of a nation from within, greased by Nazarick's indirect manipulations.

Renner's schemes also come more into focus, and we see her final preparations to betray her own kingdom. The volume builds a ton of tension around the coming catastrophe for the Kingdom, making it clear that the 'happy' peace from the previous arc is a total illusion. It’s all setup, but it’s heavy, consequential setup. I was left just waiting for the other shoe to drop on the Re-Estize nobles.

The actual new 'action' is the bit about the Elf Country and Ainz's meeting with the Elf King. That's the other major thread pushed forward, setting up the next major theater. But the core feeling I got from this book was one of grim anticipation, watching dominoes get lined up.

Volume 17, 'The Half-Elf God-kin Part II', pushes the plot forward significantly, though it feels like one of those bridge volumes. The central event is the formal establishment of the Holy Kingdom's new order under the Sorcerer Kingdom's influence, with Neia Baraja now essentially the Pope of the Ainz Ooal Gown faith. We see the political aftermath of the demonic invasion being managed, not just with force but with systemic propaganda. Demiurge's 'happy farm' subplot gets more chilling context, tying into the overall resource acquisition schemes.

What stood out to me was the focus on shifting perceptions. The narrative spends a lot of time on how the rescued citizens view Ainz, moving from terror to zealous devotion, largely filtered through Neia's perspective. There's less large-scale combat than in volume 14, but more psychological and societal manipulation. The volume ends setting up the confrontation with the Slane Theocracy, heavily implying that's where the real storm is brewing. Feels like Maruyama is methodically positioning all the chess pieces on the board for the final arcs, which is satisfying in a slow-burn way.
