The worst of the bruises on my face were turning from deep purple to lighter shades of blue and brown, slowly working their way through the rainbow of colors that meant they were healing. My ribs were still incredibly painful, especially when I tried to take deep breaths or move too quickly. The doctors had told me it would take weeks, maybe even months, for the broken bones to fully heal. For now, everything I did—sitting up, lying down, walking, even laughing if I'd had anything to laugh about—sent sharp stabbing pains through my left side that made my breath catch.

🫶 LEXI 🫶 A sharp, burning pain exploded through my left shoulder. "Ahhh!" I cried out and collapsed onto my knees, clutching the spot as though something had pierced straight through me. It hurt. It hurt so much. My breathing became ragged as wave after wave of agony shot through my body. "W-Why...?" My fingers dug into my shoulder. There was no wound. No blood either. Then why did it feel like I'd been struck? My eyes lifted to look at him.

Blake’s POV: The first thing I felt was pain. Sharp and burning, spreading from my chest to my ribs like fire. My breath came out rough as someone’s boot pressed into my thorax again. I groaned but didn’t raise my hand. Liam was holding me from behind, his arms tight around my shoulders, trying to pull me back, trying to shield me even though he was shaking himself. “Blake, stop it,” he shouted. “Stop provoking him.” Blood was warm at the corner of my lips. I tasted iron when I breathed. My right side hurt badly. I knew one of my ribs was not happy.

“He wouldn’t. We’re leaving after graduation.” She looked into Axl’s eyes. He wouldn’t lie to her. She tried to inhale—but there was nothing. No air. No sound. His lips were moving, but she couldn’t hear what he was saying anymore. He cupped her face gently and she clenched her eyes shut. “Aspen, I need you to breathe.” Tears slid down her cheeks without her even realizing it. Her chest hitched and she finally sucked in a sharp, painful breath. Axl closed his eyes for a second and pulled her against him again, his hand rubbing slow circles over her back.

I could imagine it would be like this lying on a large glass marble; perhaps at first it would be pleasant yet soon it would be just like this pain of mine. The ache is a dull, as if some lazy torturer is standing right behind me, only applying enough pressure to be an annoyance. It sits there, just to the side of the right shoulder blade toward the spine. Nat. I tried to stand up but I can't as my heart races all of a sudden. My breath becomes shallow and I'm left dragging in gulps of air. "Reece .. ?". I hear her voice. "Are you okay?". The pain spreads from my chest to my neck along to my throat which becomes itchy. My chest seems as if like a sumo wrestler is sitting on it. I take rasp short breaths at a time trying to stop the pain. Another knock sounds. "Reece .. Come on, open the door".

The pain in my shoulder is flaring up after all this movement. “Jake, please. Just- “ I stop talking when the pain becomes unbearable for a moment. Jake turns back to look at me, his brows furrowing together. I take a deep breath and slowly exhale. “You are obviously not fine. For Tyler and Allison to notice that something is wrong is proof that something is wrong.” Jake looks to the side, closing his eyes. I walk closer to him and stop before I invade his space again.

My chest felt crushed, and every attempt to inhale sent sharp pain through my ribs. “Breathe,” Darren said, his hands on my shoulders. “Just breathe. You got the wind knocked out of you.” Slowly, painfully, air began to return to my lungs. Each breath hurt, but at least I could manage it. “Something hit me,” I gasped out. “My side.” Darren’s hands moved carefully over my ribs, checking for damage. I winced when he pressed on the right side. “Probably bruised, maybe cracked,” he said. “But I don’t think anything’s broken.”

And that is to face my own pain and fix it. Taking a deep breath, I use my right hand to feel the area around my shoulder. Something is not in place, alright. But apart from the sting and the tenderness beginning to transpire, it's nothing serious. So in one go, I push against my shoulder, popping it back into place.

I found that I was unable to take sufficiently deep breaths, and I was having a difficult time preventing myself from overventilating. Even though I had taken a half dozen Motrin tablets, the pain in my ribs caused me to flinch as I ran my fingers over them. I made an effort to take deeper breaths, but as soon as I did, a searing agony shot through the left side of my body.
