I tried to breathe, tried to hold on, then she twisted the knife. Everything exploded. The pain came back stronger and sharper, tearing through me like fire. It felt like something was ripping inside my shoulder, shredding through muscle. My scream broke again, louder this time, my eyes squeezing shut as tears streamed down my face. “Where is that fighter now?” Crystal shouted, her voice filled with cruel excitement. “The one who escaped our father? Where is she?” She pushed the knife deeper and my body jerked. A broken gasp escaped my lips. My nose burned, my lungs struggled to pull in air and my shoulder throbbed violently, each pulse sending fresh waves of pain through me.

I'm sure she was worried. I looked around when I spotted the button over my left side. I sighed, reaching that button seemed like a lot of work right now. I took a deep breath before leaning towards my left to reach the button. I felt a scalding pain in my left shoulder and I couldn't help it but I cried out in pain. That would get a nurse's attention because it was semi-cry and part growl. My right hand touched my left shoulder to numb the pain and I felt a padding of bandages in my shoulder. Was my shoulder the reason I was in the hospital?

It stretched from the top of my head and traveled all the way down my body, settling mainly in my lower chest and right side of my face. I tried to push myself up but immediately cringed at the unexpected pain that spiraled in my wrist. I attempted to place more of my weight on my other arm and had better luck.

Still, her shoulder and especially the left side of her chest was aching. She groaned and palmed her chest to comfort herself but she found something rough flat thin on her skin.

The weight lifts. I don't move. I don't breathe. I press my forehead to the cold ground and breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth and shake. The heat is still in my blood. Fainter now, receding, but present, a low hum where there was nothing before. A frequency. A channel that has been switched on and doesn't know how to switch back off. My shoulder is wrong. My palms are torn. Something in my ribs when I breathe in, not broken, maybe, but not right.
