The surface of my stomach hardened until it felt like pressing against a wall. It tightened further. The squeeze deepened and a hot, sharp pain lanced upward from my pelvis to a point just below my ribs. My back arched away from the headboard and my fingers dug into my belly, pressing hard, trying to find some way to push back against it. I couldn’t breathe properly. My mouth opened but my lungs wouldn’t expand. I sat there with my mouth open and my chest locked, unable to pull in air, until a short ragged gasp finally broke through and I sucked in half a breath.

Chapter Six Mira's POV The medic pressed two fingers against my ribs. I winced. "Breath out," she said. "Slowly." I exhaled. Pain gripped my side like an electric shock. She nodded. "Not broken. But close." Thank Goodness. She moved to my shoulder next. She rotated it carefully and I bit my lip, trying not to scream. The pain in my shoulder was worse than the ribs. I had known that since the moment Caden knocked me down.

I held onto him so tight as he picked up the pace, plunging in and out of me at a rapid pace, I rested my forehead against his shoulder as the pain continued. I tried to breathe. This was too painful for me to handle. I don't know what is wrong. Perhaps it's my flare up. But it's painful to bear.

And nothing that sounded like a setup either. I let go immediately. "Oh my God." I stepped back, looking at him with genuine alarm. "Are you okay?" He breathed through it for a second with his jaw tightening. "Yeah. Sure. Just…" He pressed his left hand carefully over the shoulder. "My shoulder is still healing from all of that." He tried to crane his neck around to look at the spot and couldn't get the angle properly. "I can't even reach the spot that hurts." He said it with real pain sitting underneath the words.

Just a moment. But I’m still here. I try to breathe. It feels like acid in my chest or a thousand knives dragging across the inside of my chest. I swallow thickly, exhaling loudly, my breaths ending in sputters and violent coughs, as if borrowed from some other body. The pain is everywhere, searing through my abdomen like molten iron, sharp and unrelenting. I attempt lifting my arm, groaning softly as I crane my eyes, taking in the odd bluish coloration it was having.

Or are they scared? No matter how hard I try, I cannot look up because my shoulder blades hurt like hell. I have no idea why and why it feels as if I am carrying something heavy on my back. Everyone seems to be getting their eyes from my direction as if looking at me hurts them. It does not make sense.

I already know how to get there… I just can’t do it alone. I stare up at the ceiling like an idiot, as if it might blink back at me with divine wisdom. It doesn’t. Of course it doesn’t. Then something slams into me. A sudden, sharp ache blooms deep in my shoulder, and I jolt upright with a gasp. What the hell? The pain radiates outward like fire licking through my veins. Before I can even process it, another jab slices up my neck. I choke. My lungs refuse to expand. I can’t breathe.

ADRIAN I woke up to the steady hum of pain in my ribs and shoulder. Not the sharp, white-hot agony from before, but more like a dull and insistent ache that reminded me I was still alive, but just barely. Even breathing hurt so much, and I gasped for air.

I groaned and tried in vain to lift my head. I needed to shift back. I needed to attack. Every time I tried to initiate the shift, red hot pain filled my chest. I had never felt anything like this before. It felt like I couldn’t breathe. What the hell just happened? I forced myself to move and managed to shift my position until I could see my torso. My skin was rapidly darkening in a deep bruise and my chest was rising and falling rapidly as I struggled to breathe.

Pain tore through me, sharp and unforgiving, spreading like fire from the base of my spine to every nerve in my body. I gasped, chest heaving, but breathing only made it worse. A deep, searing ache settled in my ribs, each inhale sending a fresh wave of agony through me. My vision swam, dark spots creeping in, but I clenched my teeth, forcing myself to stay conscious. I tried to move, to shift even an inch, but the moment I did, pain shot through me like a blade slicing through flesh. A strangled sound slipped from my lips, frustration laced with agony.
