“He loved them,” I whispered, more to myself than to my grandfather. “He really loved them.”
Grandfather didn’t respond at first. He let me process the moment, allowed me to feel Victor’s agony. Then, softly, he said, “Love can be a heavy burden when it is torn away.”
I looked at him, feeling the weight of his words. “But it’s what made him human.”
“Yes,” Grandfather agreed, his voice low. “But pain, Mitch, can distort love. It can twist it into something else. And when that happens, it can drive a man to madness.”
