We shared a look and grin before he left, and I leaned back onto the mountain of pillows that Sean had stacked behind me. I sighed out in relief, rubbing my tender chest where echoes of the pain still radiated through my entire body. The next wave of pain hit lower, feeling as if someone was pushing everything down. But compared to the pain from before, it barely felt like a pinch. And it disappeared quickly, followed by intense relief--- and wetness?! My eyes snapped open, a fresh wave of fear and disbelief coursing through my body. Oh shit! No! No, no, no, no, no!

I still didn't understand why. He started to get up and another wave of pain went through me. Although it wasn't as bad as before I still howled out in pain. He held me closer and the pain dimmed slightly but it was still there. It remained there with every step he took through the woods. I tried to distract myself from the pain by looking at the beautiful multi-colored leaves. It helped a little.The beauty of the red, yellow, and brown leaves illuminated by the sunlight peeking through the trees distracted me away from the waves of pain going throughout my body.

I sink into the ice bath and hiss through my teeth as the cold bites into my skin. It's brutal, but it's better than having a constant ache in my back. Leaning my head back against the edge I shut my eyes for a second. The pain doesn't ease instantly, but the cold is a distraction from the pain. Minutes pass, and my body goes numb. My thoughts begin to slow down, still drifting between Erin, the competition and the sharp pulse of pain that runs up my spine.

“Let it go. Release it.” I squeezed my eyes tighter, focusing on her words, on the burning, imagining it dissolving, evaporating. Slowly, painstakingly, the intensity receded. The burning faded to a dull throb, and then, finally, to nothing. I open my eyes, gasping for air, clutching my chest. The phantom pain was gone. Completely.

Then the pain started to lessen. “Will it hurt?” I asked I’m ready to scream again. She looked at me, “Nope…” Oh, I sighed out of relief. ”Instead, it would hurt so much.” Wait, what the hell? I didn’t have the time to speak when a throbbing pain which is much worse than earlier began to dawn on me. “UGHH!” I shouted in pain. It hurt so freaking much! After a few seconds, the pain slowly faded. I sighed in relief, is it done?

I grunted, shaking my head. Then, as suddenly as it had appeared, the pain vanished. "Are you okay?" Ron asked again. "Are you still in pain?" Slowly, I straightened my back. I tilted my head, confused by what had just happened. The pain had been swift and it left just like that as well. Almost as though something inside me had awakened. And now it is gone. "Yes—it's gone," I muttered, almost asking myself the question. "You need to rest. You're taking too much stress from everything."

I stop after the first three steps. “Is it that bad?” His eyebrows furrow. “No, it’s not a big deal” I go to turn around, the pain coursing through my body. I grab the railing, trying to mask the flinch. This happens every so often. It typically goes away within a day. “Hey, come on. I’ll get you upstairs. Does it hurt when you sit?” Daniel asks his hand on my lower back. The warmth from his hand makes my rigid body ease. “Not too bad” I shake my head.

He tells me placing his head on our interlocked hands, he takes another breath in but keeps his eyes closed for a longer period of time after. “How can we make this go away?” I ask in a whine type tone as I feel my body begin to heat up, I knew this meant my break from the excruciating pain would be over very soon. “This is going to last for three days, but the way we stop it before that point will be too frightening for you to endure without the proper understanding.” He sighs but to hear I’ll have to go through this pain for three days, I didn’t care what the other option may be.

My heart races relentlessly as he tightens his hold on me even more, wondering how bad it will hurt. He kisses my skin one more time before I feel the sudden and intense pain of his teeth burying into me. I flinch and yelp, my hand roughly squeezing his. I whimper as he lets go, making it all quick for my benefit. I take a deep breath and try to block out the throbbing, but it surprisingly fades away as James kisses the spot again. I relax as he takes the pain away, resting against him. He says against me, "Are you okay?"
