I wasn't about to wreck a home. "So dumb." I wipe my eyes on my knees, but the tears don't stop. I look up and can see people making their way through the trees towards me. I sniff and rest my chin on my hands. My eyes trail down, and through my blurry vision, I can see dozens and dozens of flowers blooming around me. I furrow my brow, wiping at my eyes again and moving to sit on my knees and crouch over the flowers. I hadn't wiped my hands on the ground, but they were still blooming. Pink ones, purple, white. Still smaller than a quarter, but slightly bigger than the last ones I made bloom. And there were a lot more of these too. They continued to appear around where I sat as I watched.

“Mom! Open the door!! It's me–” Just then, she heard a soft rustling sound, like that of a paper. And only then did her eyes fall on the piece of paper placed on her doormat, along with a single white flower, which was considered to be the initiation of an enmity. With a hammering heart, Abby bent down and picked up the rose and the paper. She almost dropped it again on noticing that the letters were splotchy, dropping and red, as if written with someone's blood.

"Mr. Cadell, why don't you sign Liam’s name first?" Lucas suddenly thought about the past few days of remote silence from Cassiopeia and grew increasingly uneasy. The only thing on his mind now was Cassiopeia, and he would not register anything else said to him. With that, he tore the seal open. The first thing that caught his eye was a thin slip of paper with a bold, striking font pronouncing the words: "Death Certificate".

The reflection in the mirror smiled—her own face, moving without her. And the woman inside whispered, “You don’t belong here, stranger.” --- End of Chapter 1 Next: “Chapter 2 – The Lady in the Mirror”

My eyes fixed on the narrow strip of light beneath the door. Then, slowly, a folded piece of paper slid through the gap and came to rest on the floor. I stared at it, frozen, as the footsteps outside faded into silence. The chapter ended there, with me too terrified to reach for it, knowing that whatever was written inside would change everything.

His parchment skin folded in on itself until he was nothing more than a small, leather-bound book lying on the paper path. I picked it up. The cover was blank, but the pages inside were filled with the story of a werewolf and a girl, written in a hand that looked like both of ours. "We're moving into the Fourth Vault," I said, looking at the path that now stretched toward a horizon where the wooden stars were beginning to turn into real, morning light. "What's the first line of the new chapter?" Xander asked, his arm around me as we stepped off the paper and back onto the moss.

Turned it once in his hand. Outside the window the city moved through its evening the way cities do — indifferent, continuous, alive with ten thousand small stories running parallel in the dark. In one window, high above a street she couldn't name — A girl sat with her knees pulled to her chest. Not moving away from the glass. The corner of his mouth moved. Good girl, he thought. He set the rose down gently. And waited. END OF CHAPTER 10
