Paperwhite Plant Novels & Stories

I slightly pulled the curtains, inviting the beautiful view of the garden and the pond joined to it, the colorful fishes swimming around. Beside the huge glass window was a white wooden study table with a small pot of cactus above it. There were some books on it too. Beside the study table was a plant stand with ten pot plants arranged on it neatly, the pots were of brass. At the top was that 1.7 million dollar plant...um...what was the name again? Orchid....it was something Orchid? Which Orchid? Senzhen nongke Orchid....right. Now the plant was inside the small brass pot. The roots were pushed inside the mud. The whole plant theme was cute.

The only plant that grew in the pot is an ancient plant species that could handle up to 0 degrees. It grew all over the steel door that stood between me and the room behind it. The plant had blue leaves that were razor-sharp and stiff. From it came the most enchanting white flower that looked like a cross between a rose and a carnation. Petals were as smooth as silk, untouched for years.

I don’t want to believe it, though, so I click on my flashlight and sweep it across the forest floor. Several plants grow around the bottoms of the trees, and as the light touches a white flower off to my left, I pause. The flower is barely bigger than my finger, but the leaves surrounding the bottom of the grouping of flowers reach up, nearly wrapping around the petals. White Miller Leaves- it’s the second ingredient I have drawn in my journal. Hope slivers into my chest as I crouch down and pick several of the flowers, tucking them into the plastic bag I brought, labeling it with the name. One down, nine to go.

She looked at it. A text from Kofi. She read it. Her face changed. "What does it say?" Selene said. Maya held the phone out. Selene read it. The plant in the courtyard is called a peace lily. It grows toward light. I chose it specifically. I chose everything specifically. I'm sorry I didn't tell you all of it. I should have. I was afraid of losing the light. Selene handed the phone back. Maya looked at the text for a long moment.

Lanterns hang from metal hooks, ready to glow once night settles. At the center sits a small seating area beneath a large cream umbrella, two cushioned chairs facing each other with a round table between them. We sit. I glance around, smiling. “Still the plant lover I’ve always known.” I say to her grinning when suddenly my grin falters as my eyes land on a familiar plant placed carefully near the stone bench. White bloom. Glossy leaves. A peace lily. My chest tightens. “Not just a plant. A peace lily.” Lila’s voice echoes in my head.

The balcony is made from plants mostly, and some purple and blue flowers. Wisteria, bellflower, foxglove, lavender, purplish blue veronica, freesia, blue-tinted statice, and cornflowers. They are beautiful, so eternal but if you look closely you see they aren't full of life. There's something strange in those color shades. Like they are out of the world. So dark and so full of... I don't recognize this thing. Maybe, I'm just delusional. Yes, I might be, being here in this 'too much too purple' world where I feel all kinds of foreign emotions and all kinds of shades of blue and violet.

She cupped her hands together and looked into the gap between her thumbs. When she opened them, there was a brightly colored plant that was not in soil. It was stunning. I asked, “What kind of plant is this?” She smiled, “It’s called a Guatemalan Air Plant. It does not require soil. Next time it needs to be watered, I will show you how. It’s fun.”

You pot the bulbs up now, and in a few weeks it’ll be like spring in here. Maybe you’ll paint them.” He gave a friendly grin. He was big on indoor gardening. He grew everything from tulips to hyacinths, bringing the outside in. He’d gotten into it two years ago when his mother had breast cancer and had some pretty bad chemo all through winter.
