Etc, so many tittles to count, up to two thousand, all imported from abroad.

Damn, Freckles. The first book I pulled out was called “Images You Should Not Masturbate To”. I snorted, flipping through a couple of pages and shaking my head. That sarcastic streak of hers ran deep. I grabbed another, the title catching my eye: “How to Traumatize Your Children: 7 Proven Methods to Help You Screw Up Your Kids Deliberately and with Skill.” I let out a short laugh, one that came from somewhere I’d almost forgotten existed. Then there were the others—Fancy Coffins to Make Yourself, Do-It-Yourself Coffins for Pets and People, and, for good measure, How to Raise Your IQ by Eating Gifted Children. I shook my head, glancing back at her still sleeping form.

I picked up groceries, stopped by the hardware store to get wall hooks for the baby monitor, and then—on a whim—walked into the local bookstore. I hadn’t been inside in over a year. The bell above the door chimed, and the scent of old paper hit me like a memory. The place hadn’t changed much. Still cramped, still charming. Floor-to-ceiling shelves, a mismatched armchair in the corner. I wandered until I reached the parenting section. There were too many titles. Too many opinions. I almost turned away. Then I saw one tucked on the end of a lower shelf: “Letters to My Child: A Father’s Journal.”

That did not take much convincing. I spent the rest of the morning reading reviews for parenting books, and wound up ordering a small library’s worth of titles. Alexander had left me with his credit card, telling me to get whatever I needed. So I ordered a bookshelf as well, somewhere to keep all the other stuff I was buying. It wasn’t like I was going to read everything before the baby arrived. But I could get through a fair few books in a couple weeks. And I’d start at the beginning, learning first about newborn care, and then move on to the early childhood education titles later.
