Why, are there some strange books in there?” He shrugged and pulled them out of the bag, flipping them over to read the titles to you. “Well, there’s this one, ‘A Guide to Parenthood: Everything you need to know about being a new parent’, and this one, ‘1001 Games to Play With Your Baby’.” He held them up for you to see, giving you a confused look. You smiled nervously, fidgeting lightly in your seat. “Um, nope, no, those are, uh, those are for you- for us actually I guess.”

It felt strange, how something so small could pull at me like that. We kept walking. Somewhere near the corner shelf, I stopped again — a thin book caught my eye. The First Year: A Guide for New Parents. I reached for it, running my thumb along the spine. Pages soft, edges new. I flipped through — pictures of fathers holding babies, smiling mothers, small notes on feeding and sleep routines. For the first time that day, something in my chest loosened. “You know,” the storekeeper said, glancing at the book, “most fathers come back for that one. They say it helps.”

“Together.” The sunlight streaming through the library windows had shifted to a mellow gold, catching dust motes in the air.
