THE ALPHA’S GHOST
We sit there in the snow for a long moment, breathing together, grounding each other in the simple truth that we are alive.
Then the sound reaches us.
A distant thrum. Low. Rhythmic.
I look up toward the horizon.
A helicopter crests the ridge, dark against the pale sky, rotors cutting through the air. Relief and tension crash into each other inside me. Help is coming.
“Kaye,” I say. “Veilkeepers.”
Her shoulders tense.
“They felt it,” she says. “The collapse. It echoed.”
The helicopter descends, snow whipping around us as it lands a safe distance away. Armed operatives spill out quickly, weapons lowered but ready. Their movements are efficient, practiced, cautious.
