Chapter 23 – The Absence and Regalia Third Person POV Kiara spent her days, weeks, and months focusing on her studies and job, but it cannot be denied that the memory of Phoenix sitting on the bar’s high chair with a glass of rum, was engrave in her mind, that every time she would stand on the stage and dance, she would constantly roam her eyes at the bar area and automatically search for Phoenix, but there was none, there was no figure and presence of Phoenix in the bar. And even though she would not admit it to herself, she was definitely looking for him.

By sunset, only Adrian’s people remained. Adrian led her inside, his sharp gaze was all over her. The grand entrance boasted a massive chandelier, dripping with crystal, reflecting light across marble floors polished to perfection. A staircase curled up to the second floor, its golden railings gleaming under the dim lights. Art pieces hung on the walls. There was no doubt this was the home of someone who controlled everything within its walls. "Listen carefully, Seraphina," Adrian finally spoke, turning to face her. "There are rules you will follow if you intend to stay here. Break them, and we will have problems."

“I really like to get this start, because I do have other things to do tonight.” “Like that party I heard about?” “Well, it is Raven birthday, and he is my VP also I close friend. That’s not why I’m here and you know it.” “Why are you here for Phoenix?” “Don’t you dare play stupid; you know I got a hold of some information about you selling people on the black market and you’re going to stop.” “You really believe you’re going to be that person to put a stop to this. Just because you’re called Phoenix that you have what it takes to make me do anything.”

Dex kept his smiling gaze on her. "Okay, it's better than returning to my hotel room to sleep. Let's go." Phoenix rose to her feet and led the way to the door. She was beginning to feel awkward staring into Dex's eyes and she was eager to suppress the seed of desire growing inside of her. She couldn't afford any form of distraction on her revenge mission. She could tell that Dex would make one hell of a distraction to her if she continued to let him hang around her. 'I'll just use him to get settled in this city and discard him when I'm done.' Phoenix reassured herself as Dex's black Ferrari pulled up in front of the diner.

But just then, the world tilted. Something was wrong, terribly wrong. The protective barrier around the Phoenix Court, the one my mother had sealed with a fragment of her very soul had shattered. "That's impossible," I whispered. No demon beast, no matter how powerful, should have been able to breach it. Not unless…there was a traitor. Franz and I rushed out. The clan was in chaos. High-level demon beasts had invaded. A fledgling Phoenix, barely ten, was pinned beneath the foot of a boar-beast. She was moments from death.

STORM. Phoenix fire was unlike any other flame. It did not feed on oxygen or fuel. It fed on emotions. More specifically, it fed on pain. And pain? Pain had teeth. Had a voice that knew your name. It could lock a person in place like rusted iron driven through bone. Stole air from their lungs. Pain convinced them they would never be whole again, that the shattered pieces of who they'd been could never be reassembled into anything worth saving.

I watched him go, feeling the hair on the back of my neck rise. My focus returned to the hallway. As I turned, my gaze caught a small, vintage display cabinet set into the wall. Inside, catching the dim light, was a delicate, antique pendant. It was silver, intricately carved, but the detail that stopped my breath was a tiny, recurring motif on the clasp: the dark silhouette of a bird with outstretched wings. My hands started to shake. A phoenix.

But tonight, it was ours alone. Inside, the air was still, carrying the faint scent of fresh wood and promise. I closed the door behind us, shutting out the world. My cut hung heavy on my shoulders, but when I looked at her, it was like the weight lifted. “Kat,” I said, my voice rough, the name tasting like home. “Tonight, it’s just you and me. Before the boys, before the noise. I want this night with my Phoenix.” Her smile was soft, but her eyes blazed, and I knew she understood. This wasn’t about escape—it was about claiming the quiet, the fire, the bond we’d sworn before gods and family alike.

If Isabella wanted to play with physical evidence, then Liora would provide evidence that would make the entire Montgomery family never dare set foot in this country again.
