She shook her head, clearly unable to comprehend the magnitude of what I was saying. "No. No, that can't be. Your father... your father can't...." "I know, Mama," I whispered, my voice breaking. "But he's gone now. This other Alpha... he killed both of them. And everything has fallen apart."

“This is everything I’ve been able to bring for you.” I take the file, noting that it’s not nearly as packed with information as I’d like it to be. This will have to do for now, though. I need to save Ivy. “Please, Your Majesty,” Alpha Fierro says quietly. His tone has shifted to something softer now, more pleading. “Almost my entire pack has been wiped out by now. I–I’ve lost so many people I care about. The only reason I was even able to escape the plague was because I’d been away on business at the time it hit, but now it’s–but now I’m–” he pauses, choked up. “I’m the only one who’s remained unaffected.”

Narsha glanced at Dexter, whose eyes were focused on the distance while carrying Enrique. She stroked his back, saying, “Thank you. We'll get on board safely, so you need to be careful when you follow us.” Dexter's eyes softened at her touch. He smiled slightly, letting Narsha ride the helicopter first, followed by Chelsea and Cherish. And so, he and his people left the area, leaving everyone lying on the ground like dried fish until they regained consciousness, and shame enveloped them all. The next day, Dexter's face was plastered across the news with the headline: The Killer Alpha.

And it felt so good to know she had kept at least a part of her family intact. "Go take a rest. I'll ask a doctor to go see you and Jack. Your head must be hurting like hell." Lance joked. Violet nodded with a smile. "By the way, did we have any casualties? Where is Lucinda?" "No casualties, just some concussions in a few members. And everyone got back to the mansion, I think. I didn't have time to speak to her, so I guess I'll be thinking about it tomorrow as well." Lance said feeling shy all of a sudden.

“There might be more of a response if you contacted them directly. You know how they feel about werewolf society and hierarchies.” Damn it! I threw down the reports that I was looking over. He was right. I hated dealing with the hunters and their society. They were cowards, hiding behind stolen magic of witches they’d hunted down in the past. If it wasn’t for the need for peace, I would have happily moved toward wiping them out. As alpha of the strongest pack in North America, I knew that I could unite our packs and rid our continent of them if I really wanted to. But how many innocent lives would be lost if we went to war with the hunters?

“Beta.” “I assume there’s something wrong,” Darren was on his feet quickly too, appraising the guard with his eyes. “What is it?” “Sirs, there was a distress call just north of the gate I was stationed at,” the guard began to explain. “I and another guard followed the call.” “And,” I snapped at the guard without meaning to. He had a look of fear in his eyes. “What was it that made the distress call?” “It was a- a girl, Alpha,” he said. “She was disheveled, and she was crying. From what she said, she made the journey with her parents but they’re all dead now. Attacked on the way. And now she’s the only survivor.”

Had my encounter with Alaric pushed me up again? Piper swallowed hard. "This has never happened before. No student's ever climbed ten places in a single day." She looked at me, then back at the board. "Fifteen. Ten. Now five." Her voice wavered between excitement and disbelief. "If this keeps happening, what happens when you meet the last Alpha?" "No way," I said immediately, shaking my head. Clara laughed. "Guess we'll find out." Piper pointed toward the empty bed by the window. "Anyway, that one's yours."

Our Pack crumbled before we knew anything was happening. "And your Alpha?" "He was killed in the process." Kieran did not flinch but there was a coldness in his eyes now. “And you escaped alone?” “Yes.” That time, only a faint echo emerged as a result of my answer, followed by another long silence. An elderly man appeared behind Kieran. “Alpha Kieran, this poses great danger to us. A survivor from the Pack which recently fell can easily be used against us as a bait.” The mere mention of the word bait made me cringe. “I am telling the truth,” I hastened to add. “I didn’t have anywhere else to turn.”

Woke up in the locker room alone, my mouth dry, her scent still fresh on my tongue. And the worst part? I liked it. I wanted to taste her again. Feel her shake under me. Feel her surrender. But I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. Because once I let the wolf out, there’d be no putting it back in the cage. And this pack? This team? These boys I bled for? They wouldn’t survive the fallout.
