CHAPTER 4 Some pirates were singing on the other side of the deck, and playing accordion, while some later joined in dancing, and they created a scene for the others to watch. Captain Casablanca walked out of his cabin, watching them too. As he was watching a thought came into his mind. He spoke to himself, speaking out his thought, ‘could it be a good move?’ He smiled, having got a satisfactory answer within himself. He walked back to the cabin, sitting on the chair, and sat there for some minutes, thinking and then walked out, and called a pirate. The pirates were still playing music. ‘Hey, come here.’

In there, we can dock the ship safely. Just a few hours and we will arrive at the port. I already prepared everything last night as well as their identification cards. Starting today, The Pirate Hellbender will become The Salamander Adventurer. They left all the things that are related to them as a pirate on this ship for their mission and left it all here on this small ship. He tells me helpfully. "Yes but these are my babies. They are going to be angels." I tease him. He scoffs but follows me back to where my papers are sitting. He begins to look at all of the drawings that I have already completed. One shows just a vague outline of the outside. One shows the entire blueprint with minimal detail of the whole castle. The rest have more details but of much smaller areas of the castle.

"I brought some special markers, the kind that smell like fruit." "Smell like fruit?" Tom's eyes went huge. "That's so cool! Can I smell them?" For the next forty minutes, Tom and I sat at the low table while he drew elaborate pictures of penguins and dinosaurs having adventures. He narrated every detail, explaining the plot of his drawings with the seriousness of a director describing his masterpiece. "This penguin is named Mr. Waddles," Tom explained, carefully coloring in a purple penguin. "And this dinosaur is his best friend, Chompy. They go on adventures together and save people from bad guys."

The Battle of the Mid-Atlantic Jade burst onto the deck. The sky was a bruised purple, and the ocean was churning with unnatural, bioluminescent foam. Three "Skitter-Craft"—low-profile pirate boats—were circling the Acheron, firing harpoons made of conductive copper wire. The wires hissed as they hit the ship’s deck, siphoning the Acheron’s power and feeding it back into the pirate’s own "Hate-Cores." "They're draining us!" Aris screamed from the bridge. "In two minutes, the shield goes down and they’ll board!"

Even though the boy had said it several times since the morning. Damian glanced over. “Yes?” Silas held up the drawing. “Does this look like a spaceship?” Damian stepped closer to examine it. It was mostly blue and red lines with several crooked circles attached. He nodded thoughtfully. “It looks like it could travel very far.” Silas grinned proudly. “I added extra engines.” “Smart design.” Silas pointed to a small stick figure drawn beside the ship. “That’s me.” Damian studied it. “And who’s flying the ship?”

I cut dials from cereal boxes. Irene gave the moon a face and said it had secrets. We stayed in that fake ship all day. Pretending we were far away. Untouchable. Until night came again. And the wind scratched harder this time. Dinner. Candles again. Irene liked the game of it. After, he asked me to draw on his arm with pen like a tattoo. He wanted a dragon. I gave him something that looked more like a sad snake. He said it was perfect.

Not a house, not yet, but the beginning of one. I set the phone aside and picked up Mera’s sketchbook from the table. The page she’d left open had a drawing of a spaceship again this time, it had three little stick figures inside. Two big ones, one small and all of them where smiling. I wasn’t sure if that meant anything but I wanted it to.

He was so confident that he could still tell me what to do. Few years ago, he could have done that. The car turned onto the road toward my hotel. I pulled the paper out. It was a drawing of a boat. It was leaning to one side. The waves were too big. There was a stick figure at the wheel. The person had a hat that was added at the last second. I remembered watching him draw it. He made a quick line with the pencil. He thought the hat was very important. For when we go to the sea, Mamma.

He whines and I laugh at him. I raffles his hair and hold his face in my palms. “So… how is handsome Denzel doing today?” “I’m fine! Here….” He reaches for a drawing book next to him on the bed and shows me a page where drew…. Ah! I don’t even know what he drew!
