"Natalie, I'm giving you back the umbrella from when we were 18."
I glanced at it.
The umbrella looked brand new. My name was engraved on the handle. But the rain from when I was 18 had soaked me through long ago.
I didn't take it. Instead, I said, "Gabriel, an umbrella that arrives too late can't keep out the rain from years ago."
His hand froze in midair.
With reddened eyes, Hunter looked at me. "What about me? What am I supposed to do, Natalie?"
I was silent for a moment. Then, I answered softly, "What happens to either of you has nothing to do with me anymore."
