The music is birdsong, and the rumble of cars is rarely heard. Kalvis must have noticed that I suddenly became silent; that's why he turned to me. Sweat dripped from his forehead to the ground like raindrops. His white skin was red because of the hot temperature, even though it was only nine in the morning. "Why are you quiet all of a sudden?" I wiped my sweat and smiled. "Nothing. I was just too attached to the serenity of this place, away from the chaos and noise of the city. It's very peaceful here, Kalvis, don't you think?”

The ultimate peace you experience within when I write, when you feel, when there is silence and there is rehearsal of no speech. Amen. Go celebrate this day. Come seldom this way. Feel the wave. I rocked myself and sang the lullaby that my mother would sing when I was sad: Little wind that rocks the sea Rock my little one with grief As all her peace within grows strong Let her slumber in the night nice and long. The lullaby soothed me, and my voice was replaced by my mother’s in my thoughts. It almost shocked me, but I let it consume me until I stopped sobbing. I felt warmth overwhelm me, but my necklace still felt cold around my neck. I looked down and saw it shining again. “Riley,” I heard a soft whisper distantly in my mind. I jerked my head up but didn’t see anything.

I don’t want to end this calming effect it gives to me. My mind has gone blank and I feel Lorraine take the goblet from my hands and slowly guided me to lay on my back on the bed. I have never expected this surge of calmness within me before. It is like I have finally felt empty in a good way. My mind is free from thoughts, like a calm sea that has never seen a storm. I cuddle myself up under the duvet and I can’t stop myself from closing my eyes. Then and there, I drift to sleep in a hope of a better tomorrow.

Like all my worries and everything beyond her suddenly vanished into thin air, and all that was left was me, her, and the warm sensation of her palm in mine. “Listen to the sound of the birds flapping their wings in pairs, living without being chased. That calm they feel, how safe they feel,” she breathed and I felt her thumb slowly caressing my palm.

These shifted with everybody, every step of the way. The priest’s voice settled into the last blessing with the kind of practiced calm that did not ask to be remembered. There was no crescendo. No lingering pause. Just the end arriving where it always did—clean and unadorned. Celeste bowed her head, hands folded, knuckles resting lightly against the wood of the pew in front of her. The grain pressed into her knees, familiar and grounding. She welcomed the small ache because it belonged to the present. A child two rows ahead dropped a hymnal with a thud. A nervous laugh fluttered, quickly hushed by a parent’s squeeze. Celeste’s lips moved around the words of the hymn. She was not quite singin

With each cautious step backwards, I carve out the space I desperately need, the distance mirrored in his anxious gaze. "Bambi," he warns softly, a hint of urgency in his voice. "I just need space. I need to breathe," I insist, my words tumbling out like waves crashing against the shore. To calm my racing heart, I lower myself onto the soft, golden grains of sand, sinking my toes into the warmth the sun generously spreads beneath me. The gentle sound of the rolling waves provides a soothing backdrop, momentarily easing my turbulent thoughts.

It no longer spoke with howls, but with words shaped in the silence of the night. “It is calm. Finally. The pup sleeps. The Goddess smiles. The world bows. It is calm.” Dmitry closed his eyes for a moment, inhaling the cold air. And he answered in thought, as he had done since they had become one. “But calm always precedes something greater.” “Always. But we no longer need to fear what is coming. We are not the ones who run. We never were.” A comfortable silence settled between the two. Like soul brothers, like two sides of the same fire.

I reluctantly parted my lips and sang. "Standing by the riverside Breathing in the air Serenity I realize Is hidden everywhere So, I close my eyes As the water is drifting I try to memorize The beauty that I see This is what I long for A place to calm the fire raging in me This is what I've dreamed of This place where I belong is what I need All my trouble seems futile Nothing bothers me Here right by the riverside I'm free to be me Nothing can touch me now Not a whisper in my ears
