I couldn't help trembling when I saw her pale face. There seemed to be a hole torn open in my chest, with cold air howling through it. My little Charlotte. She was so young. How could she be gone? I reached out to touch her cold little face. I called out her name repeatedly, hoping against hope that she'd wake up and speak to me again. Just then, Charles staggered in. "Charlotte! Charlotte, Daddy's here!" When he saw Charlotte's body, he tried to rush forward, but I stood in front of the bed, refusing to let him get closer to Charlotte.

Like I can leave the ache behind, scattered on the sidewalk like broken glass. But it follows. It always does. Because heartbreak doesn’t shout, it sinks. Quiet and sharp, curling around your lungs until every breath feels like a war. It’s the lump in your throat you can’t swallow, the sting in your eyes you pretend is just the wind.
