According to the other person, it was more than just a means of concluding the story because at some point the other person will return to the place where they used to live and will wonder what might have been. You should not expect two people who have just finished a story to have the same point of view on the matter. Both of them are moving forward in their own ways. The other person makes the decision to abandon everything. The other individual is simply present, stranded, lost, and in search of hope.

But note that if you're facing the same thing in a story you read, it doesn't have to end up the way the story did. I wouldn't point out the characters mistake as wrong nor would I point their achievement as right. Because we all have different point of view.
