Great. Ten minutes later, Doctor Khe comes out of the building with a large crate of apples. Klay hops out of the Jeep and helps her. When they get closer, I see they are actually pomegranates. Where did this dusty ass store in the middle of the desert get fresh pomegranates from? “I hope you have a sweet tooth!” She chirps when she climbs back into the driver’s seat. “They are super fresh! Right off the tree. My husband’s aunt grows them.”

Charlotte POV: "Do you think I made enough cookies?" I stared at the piles and piles of freshly baked cookies that were covering every inch of the counter. I made a small variety of shortbread, chocolate chip macadamia cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and macadamia cookies. The chocolate chips and nuts sunk deeply into the soft, baked dough, making sure that the eater had a taste of them with each and every bite. "If Timothy stops eatin' them they'll be more than enough." Raven sneered.

“Are you heading out?” “No? I came looking for you.” “I need to do another tray of these cookies,” she says. “I’m almost out up front, and they’re a popular seller.” “Cookies,” I say, pinning her with a look. “Cookies,” she replies. “Cranberry macadamia nut with white chocolate. You can try one when they come out of the oven if you want.” Autumn makes a show of evenly spacing each scoop of cookie dough, giving it all her focus like it’s the most important thing she’s ever done. She’s obviously trying to pretend everything is fine, acting cheerful and light, but she still won’t look at me.

Chloe looks horrified. “Of course not! I’m not trying to kill you, or make you all lethargic and stuff. I want you at the top of your game when you come over tonight.” Oh. Gag. "It’s a salad with alfalfa and pomegranate seeds. The hostess at the restaurant agreed with me that pomegranates should totally still be having a moment. They’re so juicy and tart, and they look like little jewels in your food. You’re going to love it."

“No-bake cookies!” She hurried forward and started to reach out, only to pause and eye me curiously. “Are these…?” I laughed and swept out a hand. “Help yourself.” “Oh wow, thank you. Oh! Mmm. These are really good.” She swiped at her chin when some chocolate-covered oats drizzled down. I brightened as I watched the two sisters devour them as if they were starving. “Thanks. I go a tad bit heavier on the vanilla and peanut butter, lighter on the milk.”

“You don’t drink?” “I just had a shot of whiskey with a friend.” I stole a glance at Robyn drinking the same as I had. “Do you know pomegranate has the same effect as oyster?” “Mom,” Robyn warned her mother. “Just saying. You two are still young. I’m sure you don’t need—” “Don’t even say it out loud.” She rushed her words out, blinking. “Aphrodisiac.” Denise laughed. “I like to embarrass her. Do you know she has never dated anyone in three years?”

Agnes pouted as she complained, returning the washed tray to Mira. The woman worked in harmony with the older woman gossiping as they seeded the pomegranates and cut the oranges. Anne-Marie was responsible for peeling the oranges. Mira listened to the gossip as she made her signature mushroom dish. “There are some berries I picked from the woods…” Mira turned around as she thought of a sweet dish. “Should we do an apple tart or berry pie?” “Let’s do berry pie if there is enough.” Ursula said as she seeded the pomegranate “There is already apple roasted with dried grapes.”

She pulls her lips into a smile before walking over to hug and kiss her son on the top of his head. "Hello, honey, did you just finish your meal?" She inquires. "Yes," I respond. "I made him some carrots and spinach." He did eat quite a bit of it." She gives me a sad half-smile as she looks over at me. "I also baked some cookies." Romina wrinkles her brow. She's not a big fan of having sweets in the house, but a cookie every now and then isn't going to hurt anyone. "Have a cookie," I suggest. "I used dark chocolate chips and made them with all organic ingredients."

Piper had asked me to make some of my ‘famous’ mint chocolate chip cookies and send them to her. Sleep hadn’t been coming easily over the past week that I stayed here in the Gamma suite, so I figured that I’d get the cookies done tonight so that I could mail them off tomorrow. We had all of the ingredients here except for the peppermint extract, which was a key component. I knew that there was some down in the packhouse’s kitchen. Hopefully, I could sneak right in and right back out. I had just climbed onto the counter to grab the extract when I realized that it had been a futile hope.
