Rowan was half over it already, making exaggerated monster noises at a pack of pups who shrieked with mock terror and then charged him anyway. “Flee!” he cried. “The tiny terrors have teeth!” They tackled him around the knees. He went down in the least graceful way possible, cursing dramatically as he landed on his back. “That’s what you get,” Jax said from a safer distance, arms folded, but the line of his mouth had softened. Two young omegas clambered up his legs as if he were a particularly grumpy tree; he endured it with the air of a man pretending he hated every second and failing.

His brow wrinkled as I let out a puff of smoke. “And you?” Pax sighed, his hands in his pockets as he looked at me. “Jaden, I thought these games would have been more fun. But the way you are treating some of these girls. It doesn’t sit right. You always said you didn’t want to be your fath-“ my vicious snarl tore through the tunnel, shutting the two of them up. I jabbed two fingers into Pax’s chest, the ask from my cigarette falling onto his shirt, the white turning a murky yellow. “I’m nothing like him! How can you fucking say that!” Pax swallows as I push him back slightly, jabbing my hands into my hair.

“Ignore my father for a second.” Apparently Dad didn’t hear me. Daniel snorted softly before pulling another cigarette from the packet and handing it to me alongside the lighter. I passed both over to Jaxon with a small shrug. “One cigarette won’t kill me.” The tension in Jaxon’s shoulders eased slightly as his eyes met mine. “Thanks, Poppet,” he murmured before leaning closer and pressing a kiss against the side of my forehead. It lingered just enough to make my stomach tighten. He tried lighting the cigarette once.

Lex might have heard him as he winked at him and Kai feigned a heart attack as he put a hand on his chest. "I can die in peace now,” he dramatically said. "Yes, die asshole, die ! I will dance on your dead body and party with champagne over it,” Jax huffed. "Why did the Moon Goddess give me a newborn as a mate and this fvcking brat as her father,” he wailed. “With you gone, I shall feel liberated,” he dreamily added. “Happy life with happy wife,” he sighed. "Don't you dare touch my daughter !” a hysterical Kai shrieked.

POV: JAXON I was at a coffee shop. Rare moment alone. Isla had the kids. I'd escaped for an hour to work on my memoir. Needed the quiet. The space to think. I was three chapters in when he sat down across from me. "Jaxon Romano," he said. Slight European accent. I looked up. Didn't recognize him. Fifties. Well-dressed. Gray at the temples. Cold eyes. "It's Winters now," I said carefully. "And you are?"

They look like a king and queen. They sit farthest away, reserved, but he radiates power. All these men do, and I sink lower in the booth, feeling intimidated. Lena takes my hand and nods, making me feel a little better. Until I peek up again and see the hazel-eyed man still staring deep into my soul, a small smirk twisting his lips. I look away and scoot closer to Martin. “I should let you know, brother,” Jax says. “I found my mate,” he tells him.

Jax was 17, just like I was, Pat was almost 16, Haven was 12, and Sal was 5. I couldn't even imagine Jax as an Alpha, he was cruel, far from just, and unpredictable. I had no idea where he got his cruelty and lack of morality from. His mom, who was our Luna, Luna Cecilia, was practically a saint. The words hung in the air, a chilling reminder of the depths of Jax's depravity. Amani's heart sank, her spirit crushed under the weight of his sadistic desires.

I showed her a clip of her putting some liquid in my coffee this morning and a clip of my mother handing her the magic poison.She cascaded, her face pale and her body shaking with fear.
