BENEATH HER ASHES
“Forgetting your son’s birthday? Unforgivable.”
I opened my mouth to defend myself, but the words tangled in my throat. I could only stand there, the plate of pancakes trembling in my hands.
Jackson turned to Junior and crouched down, his voice suddenly warm. “Son, I’ve organized a party for you and your friends. After the event today, we’ll celebrate properly.”
Junior’s eyes lit up brighter. He clutched his father’s arm, overjoyed.
I stood frozen, useless, holding a plate of pancakes no one wanted. As Jackson and Junior walked toward the car with laughter between them the sound echoed in my ears like a funeral bell.
