Ancient, gnarled climbers, thick as her wrist, rambled over the walls and up the statue’s plinth. They were not the carefully bred hybrids of modern gardens, but old, almost forgotten varieties. Their blooms were smaller, their scent richer, deeper. Here, a profusion of soft, blushing pink. There, a cluster of deep, velvety crimson. They had fought for light and life without any human help, and their victory was breathtaking.
