My eyes slowly moved to spot the velvet-covered book and something written on it with golden ink that shined in the light coming through the open window. Despite thinking to ignore it at first, I found myself walking towards it a few moments later. Something about leaving this book without looking through it did not feel right to me, it just made me feel some sort of anxiousness I was not ready to deal with. I walked closer to the book and picked it up. On the blood-red colored cover of the book, there remained written in bold golden letters— Predators. The confusion took over whilst I looked at the name, my fingertips brushed on the velvet feeling the smoothness of it, and then I slowly ope

He sighs heavily, resigning himself, and starts eating again. “So, here’s how it goes,” I begin, my voice flat, devoid of emotion, because that’s how you have to approach it. “The prey are dressed in specific outfits, and they’re released with a five-minute head start to hide. After those five minutes are up, the hunters begin searching. The rules are simple: the hunters don’t have to kill the prey. They can just torment and torture them. But even if the prey survives being found once, it doesn’t mean they’ll live. If they’re found again, it could mean death.”

He shifted into drive and pulled onto the highway. I fell back against the seat, my chest heaving. I sobbed silently, burying my face in my chest. I refused to let him see the tears. I wouldn't give him that satisfaction. The books I read were all lies. Being calm doesn't save you. Being angry doesn't save you. Nothing prepares you for sitting an inch away from the person who just erased your entire existence. We were leaving the city. The bright streetlights faded, replaced by massive black cliffs that seemed to swallow the night sky. We were going somewhere remote.

My central nervous system was collapsing into total dark-mode. My eyes locked onto the empty glass container on the iron table. The water had been heavily laced with a high-grade military paralyzing sedative. Desperate to maintain a single line of defense, I bit down on my lower lip until the metallic taste of blood burst across my tongue, but the chemical tide was absolute. I tried to unleash a territorial roar, but the output emerged as nothing more than a broken, breathless whimper against her shoulder. "Mother... did your line... drug my wolf?"

I waited, patiently like I had all afternoon to spare until those lovely glassy eyes swept back to snag mine, "Hold it, boldly don't look away." Her fingers shook uncontrollably next to her milkshake. Her tongue peeked out to moisten her lower lips. "When that punk looks your way tonight you're going to feel exactly how you're feeling right now. Like a prey. A fawn spotted by a fox. Every instinct will tell you to look away. Your wolf will purr and cower." I squinted my gaze and made my voice drop, "You won't. You'll look him dead in the eyes, like you could devour him alive. You're the predator, not him. Not any man."
